Microsoft is advancing its vision of transforming Windows 11 into a comprehensive “AI” operating system. This shift represents a significant step towards harnessing artificial intelligence’s capabilities directly within the user interface.
The initial feature under this initiative is known as “Agent Workspace.” This experimental element allows AI agents to access frequently used directories on your system, including crucial folders like Desktop, Music, Pictures, and Videos. When enabled, these AI agents will operate continuously in the background.

The accompanying screenshot illustrates the new AI component within Windows 11 dubbed “Experimental Agentic features.” By activating this feature, users are cautioned that it may potentially degrade system performance and influence security or privacy settings, though it opens the door to novel AI-driven experiences.
Understanding Agent Workspace in Windows 11
Currently available for testers in Windows 11 Build 26220.7262, the Agent Workspace introduces a toggle that expands its functionality. The concept of Agent Workspace seems reminiscent of Windows Sandbox but deviates from a strict focus on security and privacy. Instead, it offers a unique avenue for engaging with AI in an entertaining and innovative manner.

Enabling this feature gives AI agents permission to access various applications along with local file directories such as Desktop, Music, Pictures, and Videos.
To function effectively, Agent Workspace requires permissions to utilize your applications or access specific folders. Microsoft has assured users that it is addressing potential security concerns by assigning Agent Workspace its own authorization – creating a separate account similar to individual user accounts. This includes runtime isolation, along with clearly defined rules for agent behavior.
These agents will operate independently in the background with their own set of credentials, ensuring they do not interfere with your primary Windows account. This structure allows them to run autonomously while users maintain oversight through logging features to monitor agent activities.
Default Access to Documents and Desktop

While each AI agent is assigned its own independent account, they still require access to personal directories, including essential folders like Documents and the Desktop. Users will need to grant the following permissions:
- Access to applications within Windows
- Access to personal folders including Downloads, Documents, and Desktop
However, it appears that the agents will come with default permissions that allow access to these commonly used folders without requiring explicit user consent.
Dedicated Space for AI Agents
For those familiar with ChatGPT, the notion of AI Agents will be relatable. These agents are designed with their own user interface, resembling human navigation methods. The Agent Workspace in Windows 11 grants them a dedicated desktop space, a personal user account, and access rights to perform tasks on behalf of users.
Potential Performance Concerns
In our evaluations, it was noted that activating the experimental feature comes with a warning regarding potential performance issues. This is an understandable concern given that AI agents will be consistently active in the background, consuming CPU and RAM resources as necessary. Nevertheless, initial benchmarks from Microsoft indicate that these agents should not significantly drain system resources. The company claims that while the agents are designed to be lightweight, each will have varying levels of resource demand.
