Windows 11 Introduces AI App Integration with File Explorer for Accessing Personal Files and Folders

Microsoft is in the process of rolling out an exciting new feature for Windows 11 that enhances the integration of AI applications, such as Claude and Manus AI, with File Explorer. This development aims to boost user productivity by allowing these AI tools to seamlessly access and interact with files on your PC. Users can, for instance, utilize AI to summarize documents, craft presentations, or even transform local files into an entire website.

Previous capabilities for AI integration within File Explorer were quite limited, with only four AI Actions available, and those were largely confined to images. Users could click on an image in File Explorer and access the new “AI Actions” feature, presenting shortcuts for tasks like blurring backgrounds in Photos or removing them in Paint.

Notably, while AI Actions historically redirected users to features within native applications, the new functionality introduces the ability to summarize documents by connecting directly to Microsoft 365. This feature will start appearing in Windows 11 over the next few weeks, but the highlight remains the enhanced integration of AI apps with File Explorer.

Enhanced File Access for AI Applications

AI applications like Claude and Manus will now be able to request permission to access files via File Explorer on Windows 11. This means when users choose to upload files from File Explorer to these applications, the data remains on the local device instead of being sent to the cloud. The connection allows AI to fetch information directly, streamlining the workflow.

Microsoft asserts that this approach is beneficial since it enables the sharing of personal files or folders without transferring them to the cloud. Additionally, users can maintain their focus by not having to switch between different applications. For example, while engaging in a conversation with Claude, users can instruct the AI to utilize files from their Documents folder.

The functionality removes the need for manual file transfers, as these AI tools will understand and navigate File Explorer as if it were their own workspace. This ability stems from the powerful, open-source protocol known as MCP, which facilitates the connection of AI to native applications and services.

Exploring Potential Use Cases for AI in File Explorer

According to Microsoft, the integration can facilitate complex tasks such as coding the structure of a website. For instance, the AI can access various files and folders, allowing it to assist in building a complete website by incorporating user-selected images from local storage. Imagine using images from your gallery to create an engaging web portfolio with minimal effort.

As Microsoft officials noted, “I want to build a professional-looking real estate website using photos on my device.” In this scenario, Manus seeks permission to access the relevant files and can intelligently select the right ones to expedite the website’s development and publication.

Another promising application of this technology could involve summarizing the contents of your Documents folder with Claude, followed by instructing the AI to generate a PowerPoint presentation based on those summaries.

Nonetheless, users can expect intriguing functionalities soon that promise to reshape interactions with File Explorer, enhancing how AI tools can assist in daily tasks.

Additionally, Microsoft is testing a new feature known as the ‘Agentic Workspace, ’ which will enable AI agents to operate continuously in the background, consistently accessing personal files and directories.
