Windows 11 Dev Channel Release: Build 26120.2702 Introduces New Webcam Features

New Windows Insider Preview Builds Released

Today marks the deployment of two new preview builds for Windows Insiders: one in the Beta Channel and another in the Dev Channel. The Dev Channel release introduces build 26120.2702 (KB5048761), featuring exciting enhancements such as new webcam functionalities, support for third-party passkeys, and various other improvements.

Changelog Highlights

New Features Gradually Rolled Out to the Dev Channel

Advanced Webcam Configuration

A new advanced camera options page is being introduced, which you can find by navigating to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and clicking the edit button for advanced options.

New webcam settings in Windows 11

This advanced options page will offer two key configurations for your camera:

  • Multi-app Camera: This setting allows several applications to access the camera stream simultaneously. It’s designed to assist the Hard-of-Hearing community by enabling simultaneous video streaming to a sign language interpreter and the audience.
  • Basic Camera: This option provides essential camera functionalities for improved troubleshooting, recommended when the camera is not functioning as expected. Its development was supported by Microsoft support teams.

In a future update, users can look forward to a third option that allows for media type selection, including resolution and frame rate, with the default being set to “Let Windows Choose” for the best experience.

Advancements in Passwordless Technology

In alignment with Microsoft’s initiative towards a passwordless future, this build introduces API support for third-party passkey providers. Microsoft has been collaborating with partner companies to enhance this capability, working together to elevate login security through passkey integration for all Windows users.

WebAuthn Plugin Enhancements

We’re rolling out updates to WebAuthn APIs that support a plugin authentication model for passkeys. Over the months ahead, Windows users can opt for third-party providers in addition to the native Windows passkey solution while retaining the familiar Windows Hello experience. WebAuthn messages will now be relayed to the plugin, enabling plugins to create and authenticate passkeys as requested by users, seamlessly integrating with Windows Hello for user verification.

Developers of third-party passkey services are encouraged to integrate their offerings with Windows 11 to improve user experiences. More details on implementation can be found at https://aka.ms/3P-Plugin-API.

Additional Changes and Improvements

[Start Menu Enhancements]

  • Improved filtering for recommended websites on the Start menu based on insider feedback will refine the quality of recommendations based on users’ browsing habits. We welcome ongoing feedback regarding any websites that should not be showcased.

[Settings Updates]

  • The ability for standard (non-admin) users to change time zones has been reinstated under Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time.

Fixes and Improvements

Notable Fixes in the Dev Channel

[Input Issues Resolved]

  • Fixed an issue causing the mouse cursor to become invisible with a black backdrop when pointer trails were enabled.
  • Mitigated a problem where the ALT or Shift key appeared stuck after the Windows Hello prompt appeared for some users.
  • Rectified a stuttering mouse cursor issue that occurred during movement.

[Graphics Enhancements]

  • Resolved a problem that caused certain games to display overly saturated colors when utilizing Auto HDR.

Rollback Fixes for All Dev Channel Users

Addressed the issue where rolling back from Build 26120.2510 to an earlier build displayed an erroneous dialog indicating that “Your organization used App Control for Business to block this app”when attempting to access or install specific third-party applications due to incorrect policy enforcement.

Known Issues

[General Notes]

  • [NEW] Following a PC reset via Settings > System > Recovery, your build version may erroneously display as Build 26100 instead of 26120. This will not affect your ability to receive future Dev Channel updates which will address this issue.

[Recall Feature]

  • Recall can be toggled via “Turn Windows features on or off”. We are currently caching Recall binaries, and a future update will completely remove them.
  • Some users may receive a prompt to “Make sure Recall is saving snapshots,”even when the settings indicate that snapshots are being saved. Restarting the device may resolve this discrepancy.
  • Ensure your Microsoft 365 applications are updated to the latest version for optimal document continuity.

[Click to Do]

  • There may be instances where additional context is provided through intelligent text actions powered by Phi Silica.
  • This intelligent text action leverages the capabilities of Microsoft’s secure cloud, with automatic deletion of data for safety and privacy. Future updates will replace this cloud endpoint with local moderation for prompt safety.
  • In limited scenarios, Click to Do may not highlight information on an external monitor when in extended mode.
