Latest Insights into Windows Market Shares: January 2025
As we welcome a new month, Statcounter has released its latest data on the Windows operating system market. While Windows 10 continues to lead the pack with a substantial user base, Windows 11 is gaining ground rapidly, showing resilience despite facing some challenges earlier this year.
Windows 10: Still the Leader, But Losing Ground
Currently, Windows 10 commands an impressive 60.33% of the Windows market share. However, this figure reflects a decline of 2.37 percentage points since January 2025. A year-over-year comparison reveals an even more significant drop of 6.14 points, down from 66.47% in January 2024.
Windows 11: A Steady Ascent
In contrast, Windows 11 is demonstrating notable growth. After a period marked by slight declines, it has rebounded, securing 36.65% of the market share—an increase of 2.53 points and setting a new record for the operating system. This year-over-year growth is particularly remarkable, with the market share rising by 8.82 points, compared to only 27.83% in the same month last year.
Recent Updates and Support Transition
Adding to this dynamic landscape, Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 version 24H2 for all users, including those still operating on Windows 10. With mainstream support for Windows 10 nearing its end, the company is encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11 to ensure continued support and to take advantage of new, innovative features. However, the initiative to transition is optional for those with compatible PCs.
Decline of Older Versions
While the competition between the latest versions heats up, older Windows platforms are experiencing much quieter declines. The statistics show:
- Windows 7: 2.24% (-0.17 points)
- Windows 8.1: 0.3% (no change)
- Windows XP: 0.27% (+0.03 points)
