Windows 11 26H1 Update Expected Early Next Year for Select Devices

The Evolution of Windows 11 Updates: What to Expect for Version 26H1

When Microsoft introduced Windows 11 four years ago, it transitioned to an annual update model, moving away from bi-annual feature releases. As a result, users have seen significant updates such as 22H2, 23H2, 24H2, and the more recent 25H2. Notably, version 24H2 had a unique rollout, initially launching only on Copilot+ devices before being made available to the broader user base. This approach appears poised to continue with the upcoming updates.

Upcoming Features for Windows 11 Version 26H1

According to Phantomofearth, a trusted source for Windows developments, Microsoft is gearing up for the release of Windows 11 version 26H1. This version is expected to coincide with the launch of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 processors. Notably, this update will be exclusive to devices running on Windows on Arm equipped with the Snapdragon X2 chips. However, certain features are anticipated to be available for existing PCs later in the year as part of the standard 26H2 update.

With it looking like a Windows 11 version 26H1 is about to happen for Snapdragon X2 Elite launch ONLY (this will NOT be releasing to existing PCs, that’ll be 26H2), this is a heads up to confirm that yes, I will be doing a video on the special 26H1 release early next year to cover what’s new (including non-AI stuff, yes there is some) for those getting an X2 Elite device or those purely curious.

Insights on Windows 11 Version 26H1 Functionality

Phantomofearth highlights that version 26H1 will primarily function as a platform support tailored for Snapdragon X2 Elite hardware. Microsoft plans to introduce additional features that won’t be backported to the prior updates of 24H2 and 25H2, which share a common development branch.

Sadly that’s just how things are looking, version 26H1 is purely to provide Snapdragon X2 Elite hardware with a Windows platform that supports it, it’s only a stopgap and not meant to be a full update. But as a result, changes made between 24H2 and now that didn’t get backported are being rolled into 26H1 and will make their first public appearance on that release, which will only be for X2. The features themselves will all be in 26H2, AI and non-AI, for existing PCs and you won’t need a Snapdragon at that point.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Windows 11 Updates

Although details regarding Microsoft’s 2026 updates for Windows 11 remain unconfirmed, it’s wise to approach these reports with cautious optimism. In the interim, Microsoft is actively working on a feature drop for versions 24H2 and 25H2. One of the significant additions on the horizon is a revamped Start menu, alongside several enhancements that were announced last month.

For those eager to stay informed about these developments, keep an eye out for further updates from Microsoft as they unveil these exciting features.
