Latest Insights from Valve: February 2025 Steam Hardware and Software Survey
Valve has recently unveiled intriguing statistics for both gamers and developers through its Steam Hardware and Software Survey for February 2025. This valuable data provides an insightful glimpse into the preferred hardware and software configurations among PC gaming enthusiasts.
Survey Participation and Purpose
It’s essential to note that participation in this survey is voluntary, with Valve selecting participants randomly. The primary objective of the survey is to compile averaged data that can guide Valve and game developers in making informed decisions regarding technological investments and game optimizations. Furthermore, the survey offers valuable insights into the popularity of various Windows versions among the gaming community.
Windows OS Trends
One of the survey’s surprising findings was a significant decline in the user base for Windows 11, which fell to 44.10%, a decrease of 9.36 percentage points. Despite this drop, Windows 11 still outpaces its global market share. In contrast, Windows 10 rose impressively, gaining 10.47 points to reach 53.34%.Interestingly, Windows 7, despite being largely unsupported in recent Steam versions, still retains a motivated user base, representing about 0.10% of all Windows users on Steam. However, these users are likely relying on older versions of Steam that may face functionality issues soon.
Operating System Market Share
Overall, Windows continues to dominate the Steam platform, accounting for 97.58% of users, marking a rise of 1.03 points since the last survey. Linux and macOS remain significantly behind, with 1.45% and 0.97% of the user base, respectively, reflecting declines of 0.61 points and 0.43 points.
Hardware Preferences Among Gamers
On the hardware front, Intel processors maintain their status as the leading choice among gamers, with 68.89% of participants using Intel chips. AMD holds a respectable 31.07% share, while Microsoft’s own chip offerings account for a mere 0.05%.In the graphics processing unit (GPU) category, Nvidia dominates with a substantial 83.07% share, while AMD and Intel follow with 11.49% and 5.21%, respectively. The star of the show is the Nvidia RTX 4060, which has overtaken the RTX 3060 to become the most popular graphics card on Steam, now representing 8.37% of usage.
