Windows 10 Feature is Making a Comeback in Windows 11, and I’m Thrilled

Windows 11 Enhances Features with the Return of a Beloved Windows 10 Function

As Windows 11 nears its fourth anniversary, many users are still debating the merits of upgrading from Windows 10. With support for Windows 10 set to expire in just over a month, I recently made the decision to transition to Microsoft’s latest operating system. This change was driven by my desire to avoid being on an unsupported platform, which could lead to challenges in accessing official support channels. Ultimately, it appears that Microsoft has acknowledged user feedback, as they are reinstating a feature from Windows 10 that I particularly valued.

The Return of Seconds Precision in the Taskbar Clock

Back in 2022, I voiced my disappointment regarding the removal of seconds precision in the calendar clock on the Taskbar flyout. Although this feature might seem minor at first glance, it served several specific purposes for me. I relied on it to time my body temperature readings with a Mercury thermometer, track the countdown before online meetings began, and send birthday greetings precisely at midnight.

The absence of this functionality in Windows 11 initially posed some inconvenience, but Microsoft has now responded to user input to restore this feature.

New Features on the Horizon

After testing the feature with a select group of Insiders on the Dev Channel in June and rolling it out recently in Canary builds, Microsoft has made it available as a preview for Windows 11, version 24H2 customers. As a typical precursor to Patch Tuesday, this means that the feature should be officially launched imminently, although it may be gradually released, so not all users will see it immediately.

Familiarity and Functionality

For those who appreciated this feature in Windows 10, you’ll be pleased to know that its layout in Windows 11 closely mirrors the old design, preserving the same functionality. However, unlike its predecessor where it was enabled by default, users must now manually activate this option through the following path: Windows Settings > Time & Language > Date & time > Show time in Notification Center. This change allows for greater flexibility based on individual user preferences.

A Silver Lining for Windows 11 Users

As I wrap up this editorial, I can’t help but express my satisfaction with the return of a key feature that I frequently used, especially coinciding with my recent upgrade to Windows 11. Nonetheless, I maintain my perspective from three years past that implementing such highly requested, albeit minor functionalities should not take an extended period. Continuous improvements and responsiveness to user needs are crucial for the overall success of Windows 11.
