Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday Update: Windows 10 Users Encounter New Bug
Approximately a week ago, Microsoft rolled out its Patch Tuesday updates for both Windows 10 and Windows 11, aiming to enhance the latter while addressing various issues across both operating systems. However, it appears that the update may have inadvertently introduced a significant bug affecting Windows 10 users.
Issue with Emoji Search Functionality
According to reports from Bleeping Computer, numerous Windows 10 users took to Reddit over the weekend to express their frustration regarding a malfunction in the emoji search panel. This interface is accessed via the Win +. keyboard shortcut, and users have found that searches yield no results, displaying the repetitive message, “We couldn’t find this one.”when attempting to locate an emoji.
The Culprit: Patch KB5062554
It seems that the recent Patch Tuesday update, identified as KB5062554, is responsible for this bug. Both our own testing and feedback from users on Reddit indicate that the emoji search feature functioned correctly prior to the installation of this update, only to become unusable immediately afterward.
Widespread Impact and Lack of Acknowledgment
While the precise cause of this issue remains uncertain, the reports suggest it affects a significant number of users reliant on this feature. Surprisingly, Microsoft has yet to acknowledge the bug. Their Windows Release Health dashboard does not currently include any information regarding this problem, leaving users in the dark.
Concerns Among Windows 10 Users
This unexpected issue is particularly concerning for those who prefer to remain on Windows 10 rather than upgrade to Windows 11, especially as some users find themselves using an unsupported version of the OS. Notably, Microsoft has announced an additional year of updates for Windows 10 through both free and paid methods, providing a temporary solution for those hesitant to migrate.
Awaiting Microsoft’s Response
As of now, users will need to wait for Microsoft to officially recognize the issue and potentially release a fix. Historically, Microsoft has occasionally deployed out-of-band updates to address critical system problems rather than waiting for the next Patch Tuesday; however, this situation may not meet their criteria for urgent intervention.
