Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Will Trent season 3, episode 1!

Will Trent Season 3: Ramón Rodríguez Explores Will and Marion’s Relationship

In the thrilling premiere of Will Trent Season 3, viewers are introduced to Marion Alba, portrayed by Gina Rodriguez. As the Assistant District Attorney, Marion plays a pivotal role, assisting the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) while unraveling a murder case that finds the titular character, Will Trent, embroiled in poignant personal stakes. Notably, the case impacts Will’s friend, Rafael Wexford (Antwayn Hopper), who faces false murder charges. As tensions escalate, Sunny, Rafael’s daughter, becomes a central figure due to her abduction, indicating a dramatic arc for upcoming episodes.

Insights from Ramón Rodríguez on Will and Marion’s Dynamic

In a recent interview with TVLine, Ramón Rodríguez, who stars as Will Trent and serves as an executive producer and director, highlighted the evolving relationship between Will and Marion. The actor emphasized their mutual commitment to truth, pointing out that they share a moment in the first episode that reveals their fundamental values. He hinted at an intense connection developing between them, suggesting the relationship will transcend the professional boundaries initially established.

When they meet, neither of them are looking for anything. Will is there, focused on a case, trying to get information. He runs into this woman who he doesn’t expect to be involved in [this case], and she’s an assistant district attorney, and he ends up realizing she’s got information. But I think the one connecting point that we realized, at least in that first episode, is when he says something to her… I think it’s something, like, “Doesn’t anybody care about truth and facts anymore?” and she says it later on when they’re at the office. There’s a core value that they might share, as to why they do what they do, and I think that really resonates for Will. And so, at first, it is strictly a professional thing, and I think slowly we end up seeing that it’s more than that. She’s a very different person for Will that he has not really encountered, and that we have definitely not seen. I mean, there’s been Angie, and we know that history…. there was Cricket, and that was so short-lived with a lot of potential… and then there’s Marion, who comes in and is a very slow build, and a slow relationship, and I think a lot of the things that surprise Will about her are, you know, she doesn’t judge him. She’s kind of just there, and available and present, and shows up. And they connect, and the spark starts to happen, and we kind of get to witness that, which is really cool.

The Beginning of Will and Marion’s Connection

Although their interactions are limited in the initial episode, it sets the stage for a compelling partnership as Marion’s role intertwines with Will’s investigative pursuits. As Season 3 progresses, the expectations of a deeper collaboration between them become apparent, especially considering the ongoing major cases they will tackle together. Episode 2 promises to delve further into the current kidnapping case, potentially allowing for the subtle sparks of attraction mentioned by Rodríguez to flicker into view.

Despite the early stages, viewers can anticipate a slow-burn romance developing from their shared ideals of justice and commitment to uncovering the truth. This dynamic may also signify a turning point in Will Trent’s personal life, particularly in light of his complicated past with Angie (Erika Christensen). The emotional baggage stemming from his decisions at the end of Season 2 adds an intriguing layer to his relationship with Marion.

Prospects for Will and Marion’s Relationship

As they navigate the intricacies of their professional lives, Will and Marion’s alignment in their approach to justice may pave the way for a fruitful partnership. Their similar perspectives could not only enhance their effectiveness in solving cases but also provide Will with an opportunity to address his lingering regrets from previous storylines, such as his fallout with Angie. The evolution of their partnership is something that fans can look forward to as the season unfolds.

New episodes of Will Trent Season 3 air on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
