He noted a significant drop in Safari’s search volume last month, suggesting users may be gravitating towards AI tools over conventional web search methods.
According to Cue, major players in the AI search domain, such as OpenAI, Perplexity AI, and Anthropic, are positioned to eventually overshadow traditional search engines, including Google. He indicated that Apple aims to introduce these AI search options in Safari, although they are not expected to be the default immediately due to their current need for enhancement in search indexing capabilities. Nonetheless, Cue expressed confidence that the advanced features offered by AI search tools would entice users to make the switch.
Apple’s Choice of AI Partners and Implications for Google
In his testimony, Cue disclosed that Apple has already initiated discussions with Perplexity AI regarding their potential collaboration. He highlighted Apple’s rigorous selection process for AI partners, emphasizing that prior to choosing OpenAI’s ChatGPT for the forthcoming iOS 18 on-device AI features, Apple evaluated Google’s Gemini. Cue commented that Google’s terms for Gemini contained multiple conditions that did not align with Apple’s objectives, a contrast to their agreement with OpenAI. This strategic direction not only reinforces Apple’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities but also poses a competitive threat to Google’s own AI initiatives.
Potential Consequences for Google
