“Wicked Fan Poster Controversy: Cynthia Erivo’s ‘Degrading’ Critique Sparks Wild Internet Reactions

A revised poster for the eagerly awaited film Wicked, showcasing Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, was recently shared on social media. The design draws inspiration from the original Broadway production, prominently featuring Erivo’s character Elphaba with her eyes obscured.

Following her observation of the image, Cynthia Erivo expressed her feelings on Instagram, describing the poster as “deeply hurtful and degrading”on October 16, 2024. It should be noted that her Instagram story is no longer accessible, as such posts vanish after 24 hours.

In her now-deleted Instagram story, the actress characterized the fan edit as “the wildest, most offensive thing”she had encountered. She expressed that altering her image and hiding her eyes was akin to “erasing”her identity, a move she found “deeply hurtful”and degrading.

In contrast, many fans took issue with Erivo’s response to the fan-created poster. Social media was abuzz, with some users criticizing her reaction, while others urged her to take it easy, describing her answer as an overreaction on platforms like Reddit.

One user expressed concern for the fan who created the edit, calling it a “fun little Photoshop edit”intended as a tribute to the original artwork. They emphasized that celebrities should refrain from publicly reacting to such edits.

“Not only is this a WILD overreaction, but I’m also worried about the fan(s) that made the edit,”commented a Reddit user.

Another commenter remarked on what they deemed Cynthia Erivo’s “unnecessary meanness”in her suggestion for the fan to “cleanse your palette.”They criticized her not only for her spelling error but also for her harshness.

Some internet users speculated that the altered Wicked poster merely aimed to evoke the feel of the Broadway playbill.

“Maybe I sound harsh, but Cynthia should relax, as it’s not that serious. Memes have always been a thing,”an X user commented.

“Oh come on. Must we really be offended by everything? Calm down. The fans just wanted to create something resembling the original poster. There’s no hate intended,”another X user added.

Cynthia Erivo’s comments about the fan-created poster ignited discussions comparing the original and edited versions. Some netizens claimed the modifications actually enhanced the poster, asserting it provided “more mysterious and cheeky vibes.”

“Just give me a break. The original poster is lifeless and tells us nothing about her character. This minor edit with the smirk reveals so much more about her personality and the movie. Give it a rest, Cynthia. ‘To hide my eyes is to erase me’? Spare us,”an X user remarked.

“Showing just the grin and hiding the eyes adds a mysterious and cheeky touch, to be honest,”commented another X user.

“Honestly, the actual poster is bland. What is the expression she’s making here? Is she sad? Distressed? I can’t tell. The edit looks much cooler,”added yet another user on X.
