Why Wonder Woman Proved Me Wrong About DC’s Absolute Universe

Warning: Spoilers for Absolute Wonder Woman #4

The emergence of the Absolute Universe has proven to be a significant triumph for DC Comics. Initially, I was hesitant about the creative direction proposed for this new continuity, particularly concerning Wonder Woman. However, this latest series has crystallized my understanding of the unique allure of the Absolute Universe, illustrating how it resonates profoundly with its audience.

The Heroic Journey in Absolute Wonder Woman #4

In Absolute Wonder Woman #4, crafted by the talented team of Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey, we are treated to a gripping narrative that sees Diana facing the formidable Tetracide. While the action sequences are captivating, it is the poignant dialogue shared between Diana and Etta Candy that truly elevates the issue.

Absolute Wonder Woman #4 Diana hope-1

As Diana prepares for battle, Etta reflects on her hero’s impact, noting, “You make everything seem better than it is. Hopeful.” This simple yet powerful observation encapsulates Wonder Woman’s ability to instill hope, even within the darkest corners of the Absolute Universe, thereby exemplifying the strength of this narrative.

A Bright Spot Among Darkness: Wonder Woman’s Role

Etta’s faith in Wonder Woman as a beacon of hope harkens back to an earlier moment in Absolute Wonder Woman #3. When a sinister creature threatens Gateway City, it lures victims with an irresistible sound. In a daring move, Diana resolves to deafen the citizens to protect them and, during a live broadcast, confidently proclaims, “Wonder Woman believes in you.”Here, she empowers the people, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to their well-being.Diana’s tenacity to remain hopeful amid calamity distinguishes her in the Absolute Universe.

Before the chaos brought by the Tetracide, Wonder Woman’s influence was evident even in her earlier interactions. Circe, who once harbored darkness, transforms their hellish dwelling into a haven upon realizing Diana’s inherent goodness. Likewise, Steve Trevor is struck by Diana’s genuine kindness despite her adversity. This relentless compassion provides a counter-narrative to any assumption that the Absolute Universe is solely a grim tale.

Wonder Woman vs. Darkseid: Reversing the Narrative

A major concern regarding the Absolute Universe was its potential to stray too far from established continuity, possibly diminishing beloved characters. Originating from Darkseid’s demise, this universe strips away the familiar support systems that heroes like Wonder Woman and Batman have always relied on. For instance, Wonder Woman is separated from her Amazonian roots, which could potentially render her vulnerable. Such transformations fostered my apprehension that these stories would veer too deeply into despair.

Witness Darkseid’s downfall and the ensuing formation of this universe in DC All In Special #1, skillfully penned by Joshua Williamson and accompanied by an impressive roster of artists and colorists.

Fortunately, Wonder Woman’s embodiment of optimism serves to alleviate my reservations.Despite the heroes’ diminished resources, their fervent desire to enact change remains undeterred. Batman’s diminished fortune does not deter him from combating Gotham’s corruption, nor does the absence of the Kents in Superman’s life diminish his drive to protect the innocent. They cling to the belief that they can effect positive change, illustrating the resilient spirit of their heroes.

An Unyielding Fight for Justice

Even in the face of Darkseid’s oppressive regime, Wonder Woman’s unbreakable spirit shines through. Regardless of the circumstances, DC’s iconic heroes maintain their commitment to fight the forces of evil, advocating for the defenseless. As I reflected on my earlier concerns, I recognized that Wonder Woman is a testament to the stories retaining their heart, even amid turmoil. The balance of darkness and heroism in the Absolute Universe is ultimately what makes these tales compelling.

Absolute Wonder Woman #4 is now available for readers, showcasing a storyline that reinforces the indomitable spirit of hope!
