Why Snotgirl Is the Ultimate Shojo Comic, Even Though Scott Pilgrim Is Amazing

Why Snotgirl Is the Ultimate Shojo Comic, Even Though Scott Pilgrim Is Amazing

In July 2016, comic book enthusiasts welcomed the arrival of Snotgirl, created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and Leslie Hung. This captivating romance comic arrived at a pivotal moment as I embarked on my journey through the world of comics. As I explored this new medium during my college years, my earlier interests in DC and Marvel, fueled by films and television shows, began to expand into independent comics—a realm I was eager to discover.

Some standout indie titles from my college days, such as Bitch Planet, Lady Killer, and Sex Criminals, profoundly impacted my passion for comics. Among these, Snotgirl held a special place, captivating me and transforming me into a lifetime comic aficionado. Even though many of the indie series that had first drawn me in came to a close, I could hardly believe that nearly a decade later, I would still be following new installments of Snotgirl.

This renewed engagement is the result of a lengthy pause of over four years between the release of Snotgirl #15 in March 2020 and the highly anticipated #16 in December 2024.Snotgirl has returned, and the new issues have proven to be worth every moment of anticipation.

The narrative of Snotgirl revolves around Lottie Person, a fashion influencer battling severe allergies—though she perceives herself as flawless. In reality, Lottie’s self-obsession and unkind demeanor often overshadow her life. Everything shifts upon the arrival of Caroline, a cool and enigmatic figure who sparks Lottie’s desire for change. As Lottie tries to win Caroline’s affection, she also grapples with dark secrets, including potentially questionable actions.

Over the course of fifteen issues, Snotgirl masterfully developed the relationship between Lottie and Caroline. Both characters were undoubtedly flawed, yet my investment in their connection remained strong. The gratifying moment when they officially got together in Snotgirl #15 was overshadowed by an unexpected hiatus, leaving many fans yearning for more.

Although the fifteenth issue concluded with a sense of closure for their relationship, I craved deeper insights into their dynamic, particularly with the multitude of mysteries surrounding Caroline. While we witnessed their union, the series has numerous threads left untied, and we are finally poised to explore these layers anew.

If you haven’t yet experienced Snotgirl, now is the perfect time to dive into this series, especially as we anticipate answers to Caroline’s ongoing mysteries. Following a successful year for shojo anime in 2024, Snotgirl stands out as the ideal comic for fans looking for compelling narratives. The richness of character development would even translate beautifully to a television adaptation.

Fans of Ai Yazawa’s works such as Paradise Kiss, Neighborhood Story, and Nana will find much to love in Snotgirl. The series beautifully combines elements of drama, romance, and fashion, all intertwined with intriguing mystery.

As social media culture continues to evolve, Snotgirl resonates with modern audiences more than ever, addressing Lottie’s unhealthy obsession with online validation. When the first issue debuted, platforms like TikTok had not yet emerged, making the exploration of these themes in 2025 particularly poignant.

O’Malley has proven himself a virtuoso in crafting coming-of-age stories that resonate with adult audiences navigating their lives, be it through the lens of Scott Pilgrim or Lottie Person. Despite Lottie’s often self-centered and chaotic tendencies, readers find themselves rooting for her, hoping she can discover authentic connections beyond her digital presence.

With gorgeous art by Hung, Snotgirl appeals to both comic aficionados and young adult literature fans alike. Each page bursts with vibrant colors and intricate fashion choices, transporting readers into a stylish world reminiscent of a fashion editorial.
