Highlights from Scream 7 Developments
- Neve Campbell and Kevin Williamson return, reintroducing Sidney Prescott and her family into the narrative.
- Fans advocate for significant character deaths to elevate the intensity and horror of the sequel.
The upcoming Scream 7 film is intriguing as it seems to capture the essence of earlier installments. With the exciting news that Neve Campbell will be returning as Sidney Prescott and the talented Kevin Williamson at the helm, the franchise appears to be perfectly poised to delve deeper into its roots. Considering that Isabel May has been cast as Sidney’s daughter, fans are eager to see how this family dynamic will interweave with the trademark blend of humor and horror the series is known for.
While I enjoy revisiting the previous Scream films, my reflections on Scream 6 have led to some concerns. It’s crucial for Scream 7 to rectify certain missteps from its predecessor.
Addressing the Shortcomings of Scream 6

At the conclusion of Scream 6, the core characters seemed ready to recover from their harrowing experiences with Ghostface. However, the decision to have every main character survive raises concerns. Despite the audience’s attachment to these fan-favorite characters, the inherent logic of horror dictates that not every character should come out alive, especially in a slasher film. The survival of characters like Mindy (Jasmin Savoy-Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) felt implausible given the severity of their encounters.
For a poignant contrast, consider the death of Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) in Scream 2. His tragic demise impacted viewers deeply, but it also served a significant narrative purpose. Kevin Williamson, reflecting on this choice, noted, “We had to kill a legacy character to raise the stakes and elicit a strong emotional response from the audience.” Such decisions create tension and remind viewers that no character is truly safe.
Particularly puzzling was Chad’s survival, as his on-screen injuries were quite severe. It appeared that the writers were keen on preserving the presence of Mindy and Chad for Scream 7, yet their returns remain unconfirmed. With this uncertainty, it might have been more impactful if Chad’s character had succumbed to his injuries. If Mindy does return, her struggle with grief over her brother’s death could provide a compelling storyline that drives her actions against Ghostface.
While I was relieved that Gale survived her close call in Scream 6 as a legacy character, I firmly believe that at least one prominent character’s death is necessary for Scream 7. Ideally, this would be a newly introduced character, as it would intensify the horror and gore while preserving the potential for both Sidney and Gale to return for future installments.
Initially, I was skeptical about Dewey Riley’s death in Scream (2022). However, over time, I’ve come to appreciate it as a pivotal narrative decision that showcased the ever-present danger of Ghostface. While the shock of seeing him attacked with a shotgun was unprecedented, the aftermath left audiences longing for a greater sense of vulnerability among the characters. The reality that many survived unscathed diminished some of the franchise’s trademark fear.
Analyzing the Kill Count in Scream 6

While the overall body count in Scream 6 was somewhat subdued, there were still several memorable and gruesome deaths. As is tradition, all three Ghostface killers met their demise: Ethan Landry (Jack Champion), Quinn Bailey (Liana Liberato), and Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney). The most emotionally stirring death was certainly Anika Kayoko (Devyn Nekoda), whose innocence and kindness made her loss particularly painful, reminiscent of Tatum Riley’s (Rose McGowan) iconic demise in the franchise’s early days.
Other noteworthy deaths included Greg, Jason Carvey (Tony Revoloroi), Dr. Christopher Stone (Henry Czerny), and Laura Crane (Samara Weaving). Laura’s death in the opening sequence stood out for its creativity and shocking execution, leaving audiences guessing about the identity of Ghostface. For Scream 7, fans hope for an equally captivating opening scene that leaves them satisfied with the unfolding narrative by the time the credits roll.
