Fans of the One Chicago franchise have reasons to be excited as the upcoming crossover event approaches. While specific details remain sparse, actor Patrick John Flueger hinted that this crossover may diverge from the more extravagant spectacles of past events. The NBC franchise encompasses three popular series: Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med. These series frequently unite for crossover episodes, with only three major three-hour events occurring since 2016, the last of which took place in October 2019. Now, viewers can look forward to a fourth event that promises a fresh approach.
Scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, 2025, on NBC, the new crossover will follow a slightly altered schedule.Chicago Fire will commence at 8 PM ET, followed by Chicago Med at 9 PM ET, and wrapping up with Chicago PD at 10 PM ET.
Although there have been smaller crossovers in the series—mixing characters from Chicago Fire and Chicago PD, or Chicago Med and Chicago Fire—nothing can rival the thrill of when all three shows collaborate for a full-fledged three-hour event. The pandemic greatly impacted production schedules, halting crossover events due to safety protocols. Now, after more than five years, fans are eagerly anticipating a return, albeit with a twist.
The Grounded Approach of One Chicago’s 2025 Crossover

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Flueger shared insights about the upcoming crossover, which will revolve around a dramatic gas explosion in a high-rise, leaving numerous individuals trapped underground, including two well-known franchise characters. When pressed for details regarding the disaster’s unfolding, Flueger explained:
“I can’t tell you too much about exactly what everyone’s up to. I will say that I think out of all the crossovers, this one maybe doesn’t have as much smash bangs and booms, but it’s incredibly grounded and character-driven. And I think if we’re going to come back out of the gate with a three-part crossover, we did pretty well this time as far as just leaning into the characters, leaning into the relationships, leaning into the fact that these people do work in a city where they bump into each other pretty consistently.”The emphasis on character relationships reflects a new approach that prioritizes the depth of interactions over sheer spectacle.
Flueger’s insights suggest that, while the gas explosion will serve as a pivotal moment, it may be one of the few high-adrenaline sequences in an otherwise character-focused narrative. Previous One Chicago crossovers often relied heavily on dramatic action, fitting for the large-scale nature of the events. However, the upcoming episodes will showcase a more intimate view of the characters in action.

A Landscape of New Dynamics Across All Three Shows
Flueger’s comments instill hope that this new crossover will effectively meet fan expectations. Given the evolution of the casts since the last crossover in 2019, a focus on character dynamics is crucial. There are many new relationships and interactions to explore, signalling that the narrative could prioritize these evolving dynamics over the previously relied-upon dramatic intensity. As viewers await the January 29 event, it remains exciting to consider how this unique crossover will be received in comparison to its impressive predecessors.
