Lady Gaga Discusses the “Art of Darkness”in Shaping Her Character for Joker: Folie à Deux
During the initial press screenings of Joker: Folie à Deux on September 22, Lady Gaga took the opportunity to interact with fans and discuss her character:
“I would do anything for love, and she [her character in Joker] would too.”
Gaga elaborated on how the concept of the “art of darkness”significantly influenced her portrayal in the film, sharing:
“Darkness healed me even to this day. Not always, but, like, in the moments where I sort of explore the dark arts of, you know, film or fashion or photography, makeup, music.”
She continued:
“I always, like, go to another level when it’s dark. And that creates a kind of war within yourself when you feel that way.”
Prior to the screenings, Lady Gaga teased her participation in Joker 2 through cryptic Instagram posts, stating “I’m ready for my interview”and “Don’t tell me what to wear.”
In a previous interview with Variety, Gaga praised director Todd Phillips’s bold vision for Joker: Folie à Deux, highlighting its rich blend of genres, including “music, dance, drama, courtroom drama, comedy, happiness, and sadness.”She remarked:
“He took a very big swing with this whole concept and with the script, giving the sequel to Joker this audacity and complexity.”
Joker: Folie à Deux is characterized as a musical romance, continuing from the events of its predecessor, Joker (2019). This sequel unfolds in Arkham Asylum, where Phoenix’s Joker, Arthur Fleck, is detained following his involvement in a tragic incident in Gotham City.
Within the asylum, Fleck encounters Lady Gaga’s Dr. Harleen Quinzel, an eccentric psychiatric patient who forges a romantic connection with him. The film’s trailer suggests that they will ultimately escape the asylum to unleash chaos upon Gotham City once again.
The trailer also showcases dancing scenes between Gaga and Phoenix, set to several classic songs, including “What the World Needs Now Is Love,””That’s Life,””Get Happy,”and “For Once in My Life.”
Addressing the audience at CinemaCon, director Todd Phillips explained his rationale for casting Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel, stating:
“We cast Gaga because she’s magic. I was a producer on A Star Is Born… That was the first time I really met her and got to watch her work. As we were writing this script, Scott [Silver], who I co-wrote with, kept going back to her.”
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to premiere globally on October 2, 2024.
