Why I’m Relieved Benedict Cumberbatch Won’t Appear in Avengers: Doomsday for a More Streamlined Marvel Team Roster

The recent remarks by Benedict Cumberbatch regarding his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have generated significant buzz surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. The actor has confirmed that Doctor Strange will not appear in this upcoming Avengers installment. While some might view this as a setback, Cumberbatch’s absence could actually hint at an exciting direction for the franchise, suggesting a spotlight on a new lineup of heroes for this crossover event.

Doctor Stephen Strange was last seen in the theatrical release Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022. The narrative concluded with Strange embarking on a mission alongside Charlize Theron’s Clea, aimed at thwarting a potential incursion into the Dark Dimension. This context likely explains Cumberbatch’s non-involvement in Avengers: Doomsday, yet it’s essential to appreciate how this might pave the way for fresh narratives and heroes as we move towards Avengers: Secret Wars.

A Change in the Avengers Lineup Post-Endgame

Addressing the Gap

It’s notable that the MCU has not assembled an official Avengers team since the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. With the sacrifices made by Black Widow and Iron Man, followed by Steve Rogers’ retirement and passing of the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, the team has been left in limbo. Though Thor and Bruce Banner remain in the narrative, Clint Barton’s Hawkeye has taken a backseat to Kate Bishop, who is now the new face of Hawkeye after the events of the 2021 series. One might expect the MCU to rally a new team of heroes quickly, but that has yet to materialize.

Currently, the closest the MCU has come to forming new teams is through the endeavors of Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop, who are establishing a Young Avengers group. Additionally, CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is assembling the Thunderbolts, which includes the likes of Bucky Barnes and Yelena Belova. This context sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday to potentially introduce and form a new team of Avengers for moviegoers, seven years after the poignant events of Endgame.

Defining the New Avengers Dynamic

In light of Cumberbatch’s remarks regarding his absence, I view this as a positive opportunity. With the complexities involved in assembling a new Avengers lineup, a more condensed and focused roster could be beneficial. This approach allows the film to dive deeply into the dynamics among the new heroes, such as Sam Wilson’s Captain America and Spider-Man, enriching the narrative with unique interactions and character development.

It’s important to note that even a “smaller”team in Avengers terminology can still feature a sizable cast. Reports suggest that Avengers 5 will showcase many characters, raising the possibility of a crossover with the anticipated Fantastic Four. Given Robert Downey Jr.’s potential involvement as Doctor Doom, the incorporation of multiple heroes may come into play. However, Doctor Strange’s absence indicates that the film isn’t under the same pressure to incorporate an overwhelming number of characters that characterized Endgame. That spectacle may be reserved for Avengers: Secret Wars.

Setting the Stage for Future Avengers Battles

A Multiverse Awaits

None

Cumberbatch has also confirmed his involvement in Secret Wars, indicating that the sixth Avengers film will feature a much larger array of characters compared to Doomsday. This divergence presents the chance for both films to tell their unique stories while contributing to a larger narrative arc that will wrap up the Multiverse Saga within the MCU’s sixth phase. Thus, Doctor Strange’s mission in the Dark Dimension is unlikely to be ignored, especially with rumors of Doctor Strange 3 premiering between these two pivotal movies.

Mark your calendar: Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on May 1, 2026, followed closely by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
