The speculation surrounding the casting of Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has generated significant buzz, with Keanu Reeves frequently cited as a top contender. While I acknowledge the allure of Reeves for this iconic Marvel antihero, I believe there is a stronger candidate for the role. Despite previous portrayals by actors like Nicolas Cage and Gabriel Luna, Ghost Rider has yet to make an official entrance into the MCU, and as a devoted fan of the character, I eagerly anticipate a well-executed introduction.
Marvel Studios has shifted its narrative focus toward the supernatural and mystical elements within the MCU, leading to widespread speculation about the formation of the Midnight Sons. In my view, Ghost Rider—whether represented as Johnny Blaze, Robbie Reyes, or Danny Ketch—must be a part of this burgeoning team. Though numerous actors have been fan-cast for the role, I respectfully oppose the idea of casting Keanu Reeves.

Keanu Reeves has emerged as a prominent candidate since discussions about Ghost Rider began. In a revealing moment on Jimmy Kimmel Live in October 2022, Reeves shared that the role of Ghost Rider has been his dream since he was ten years old.

While Reeves stands out as a favorite among fans, he is not the only name in the conversation. Other contenders, including Ryan Gosling, Glen Powell, Boyd Holbrook, and Charlie Hunnam, have also been suggested. However, despite Reeves’ impressive attributes—such as his confident persona and extensive action experience—my preference leans toward a different actor for Ghost Rider.
Why Keanu Reeves Might Not Be the Best Fit
Ghost Rider: A Role Too Close to Home for Reeves
Despite his popularity, I am not convinced Keanu Reeves should embody Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider shares characteristics with many of Reeves’ previous roles, which might inhibit the introduction of a distinct portrayal. A fresh face could bring new energy to the character, apart from the shadows of roles like Constantine, John Wick, or Neo. A different actor could invigorate the MCU’s supernatural storyline and depict Ghost Rider in a way that feels more original.
In my opinion, the MCU would benefit from casting Reeves as a variant of Ghost Rider or assigning him to a new character altogether. The What If…? series confirmed that numerous Ghost Rider variants exist within the MCU, suggesting possibilities for Reeves to explore his fantasy role without committing to the primary Ghost Rider narrative. While I would love to see Reeves in the MCU, I maintain that another actor better fits the Ghost Rider mold.
My Choice for Ghost Rider: Norman Reedus
Norman Reedus: The Perfect Ghost Rider?
Consider Norman Reedus, widely recognized for his role as Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead and its spinoffs. I believe Reedus would be an exceptional choice to embody the gritty essence of Ghost Rider in the MCU. Notably, Reedus is a passionate motorbike enthusiast, hosting the docuseries Ride with Norman Reedus, which perfectly aligns with Ghost Rider’s iconic motorcycle imagery.
Reedus’s portrayal of the strong, silent type resonates well with the Ghost Rider character, and his experience in motion capture for video games, particularly in the Death Stranding series, equips him for the supernatural elements of Ghost Rider’s fiery persona.
Much like Reeves, Reedus demonstrates a wide acting range, providing raw emotion, high-stakes drama, and even moments of levity. However, his approach consistently offers something fresh and engaging, making him an exciting candidate to explore the depths of such a multifaceted role as Ghost Rider.

Reedus has openly expressed his excitement for the possibility of portraying Ghost Rider in the MCU, which fuels my hope for this ideal casting. In 2016, he shared with Uproxx that he would eagerly accept the role, admiring Nicolas Cage’s portrayal while yearning to bring his own interpretation to life. His enthusiasm was apparent when he declared, “I want to play Ghost Rider,” to ComicBook in 2021.

The Ghost Rider conversation has been coming up for years, and yeah, tell them to put me in it. I want to play Ghost Rider. That would be great. So, I don’t know, call somebody, make that happen. In a 2022 interview with ComicBook, Reedus reiterated his enthusiasm, saying, “Fingers crossed.”However, there has been little development on his potential casting since then. Ultimately, I believe Reedus embodies the ideal Ghost Rider, whereas Keanu Reeves would excel in a different, perhaps more sophisticated role within the MCU. As anticipation builds for Ghost Rider’s live-action debut, I’m optimistic that news regarding the Spirit of Vengeance’s casting will emerge soon.
