Here’s how Microsoft’s efforts have paid off:

One of the standout aspects for me is its simplicity—there are no persistent upsell attempts for unnecessary products.

Ransomware Defense

Don’t Let Ransomware Hold Your Data Hostage

The Controlled Folder Access feature creates a barrier against unauthorized applications seeking to alter or access your important files, protecting against ransomware attacks. Activating and personalizing this feature is straightforward, requiring just a few clicks.

To enable it, simply search for Ransomware Protection in the Windows search bar. The first result will direct you to the corresponding Windows Security window, where you can monitor blocked applications and adjust permissions for trusted software.

SmartScreen Filter

Steer Clear of Suspicious Websites

Taking security a step further, Windows Security includes the SmartScreen Filter, which acts as an anti-phishing mechanism. It alerts you to websites notorious for malicious activities, utilizing a continually updated cloud-based database to enhance your browsing safety.

To enable it, launch Windows Security via the search bar, navigate to App & browser control, and under Reputation-based protection, find Reputation-based protection settings. Ensure that the SmartScreen feature for Microsoft Edge is activated.

Tamper Protection

Ensure Protection Even When Offline

Tamper Protection serves as a vital layer of security. If someone gains access to your device, it prevents them from altering critical security settings such as malware detection or threat protection.

With this feature toggled on, you maintain complete control as the sole administrator. Even if you inadvertently download malware or click on phishing links, your security settings remain intact.

To verify it’s on, search for Tamper Protection in the Windows search bar. Scroll to the bottom of the settings page to toggle Tamper Protection on or off.

Firewall & Network Protection

Rely on a Robust Firewall

Indeed, Windows Security encompasses not only antivirus measures but also a fortifying built-in firewall. This feature is especially crucial when connected to public networks, as it filters your network traffic to ensure that only legitimate data enters or exits your device. You can also adjust the firewall settings to suit your desired level of protection.

To access the Windows Firewall, open Windows Security from the search bar.
Navigate to the Firewall & network protection tab found on the left side of the window.
Click on Public network and similarly adjust settings for Private network.
Ensure that Microsoft Defender Firewall is enabled. Then, at the bottom of the window, check the box for Block all incoming connections, including those from allowed applications.

This step is particularly vital when using public networks, where the risk of cyber threats is heightened compared to private networks.

Data Encryption

Safeguard Your Data Securely

Encryption is a key element in protecting your data and digital assets beyond just securing your internet connection. Within Windows Security, you can define how to encrypt your device, safeguarding it against both online and offline theft.

To access device encryption settings, open Windows Security, click on the Device security tab, and at the bottom under Data encryption, click Manage device encryption. Enable the Device encryption option to ensure your device is protected against unauthorized access.
