Why did Bridgerton season 3 skip Benedict’s story despite it being his story in the book series? Explained
Bridgerton season 3 will break from the novel’s structure. The hit Netflix series, based on Julia Quinn’s popular book series, has followed the books’ order thus far, focusing on Daphne and Anthony in seasons one and two. However, season 3 will deviate from the books by skipping Benedict’s story and delving deeper into the relationship between Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).
In accordance with the novel’s order, book 3 focuses on Benedict and his relationship with Sophie Beckett. However, the third season of Bridgerton will be based on Julia Quinn’s fourth novel, “Romancing Mister Bridgerton,”to delve into the romance between Colin and Penelope.
The creators of the series clarified that this decision was made as a result of the extensive time they have invested in developing the storyline of the two characters.
Why Bridgerton season 3 is straying from Julia Quinn’s book series
Despite the series focusing on Benedict Bridgerton, the creators have spent nearly two seasons developing the characters of Pen and Colin to become fan favorites. However, the end of Bridgerton season 2 leaves Benedict feeling lost and unsure of his dreams after discovering that his brother Anthony had secured his spot in art school. Benedict still yearns to uncover his true purpose in life.
As a result, the creators believed it was appropriate to move forward with the storylines for the remaining two characters. While the series’ plot diverges from the novel, this decision will ultimately enhance the romance between Penelope and Colin in the series and allow Bridgerton fans to spend more time with one of their beloved characters in the upcoming season 3.
Additionally, this time period will give Benedict the opportunity to fully pursue his romantic feelings for the person he ultimately wants to build a life with. Bridgerton show-runner Jess Brownell shared with Entertainment Tonight:
“On the Benedict side, he’s such a fun character and such a fan favourite that we are really excited to play with him for a little bit more and let him have more fun before he settles down.”
Despite Colin Bridgerton’s public ridicule of her during season 2, Penelope has come to terms with the fact that her crush is not meant to be. This allows her to focus on her secret identity as Lady Whistledown, which she maintains to escape the pressures of her family. As a result, Penelope finds herself in a unique position within the 19th-century marriage market, much like Daphne and Edwina in the previous seasons.
The blurb intentionally avoids mentioning whether Penelope is looking for a “love match,”as her actions are driven by her devotion to Whistledown rather than romantic feelings. Penelope’s loyalty to Whistledown, while generally commendable, creates a rift with her closest confidant, Eloise Bridgerton, in season 2.
Bridgerton season 3 will deliver a touching reunion for fans of the show. Colin’s realization of Penelope’s absence and her sudden lack of communication with him will serve as the foundation for a compelling story, evoking strong emotions and taking inspiration from the events in Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
Despite Colin’s obliviousness to Penelope’s romantic feelings, she has remained enamored with him. In season 3, Bridgerton will likely focus on Penelope’s initial crush and her eventual hope for a reciprocated love, while Colin will undoubtedly experience a more intense and unexpected fall.
