Who does Zhang Weili train with? All about the Chinese star’s training partners
Zhang Weili, the current UFC women’s strawweight champion and the first Chinese titleholder in the promotion, is getting ready for her upcoming title defense against fellow Chinese fighter, Yan Xiaonan, in the co-main event of UFC 300.
However, what about the gyms and facilities where Zhang trains? Additionally, who is her trainer and potential sparring partner?
Where does Zhang Weili train for her fights?
Zhang Weili’s training is overseen by Chong Xie from Hyperarch Fascia Training, as well as Xuejun Cai, her head coach for MMA, and Pedro Jordão for Brazilian jiu-jitsu. However, it is her work at Hyperarch Fascia Training that is credited for her physical prowess as the UFC champion.
Take a look at Zhang Weili’s padwork:
Over the years, Zhang has been working with Hyperarch Fascia Training to enhance her physical abilities, specifically in terms of strength, conditioning, explosiveness, and mobility. This partnership between Zhang and Chong is not a recent one, as she started training with him five years ago, even before she became a champion.
However, what about her MMA gyms? ‘Magnum’ divides her time between Black Tiger Fight Club and Bangtao Muay Thai & MMA. At the former, she often trains with male fighters such as Haotian Wu, Shuai Yin, Shaoxiang Wang, Shuai Yang, and Maye.
Despite this, Bangtao Muay Thai & MMA offers numerous opportunities for female training partners such as Jada Ketley, Karolina Arm, and Veronika Patrikova. In her upcoming fight at UFC 300, ‘Magnum’ will utilize all of her training and preparation as she strives for her second successful title defense.
Zhang has held the title of women’s strawweight champion twice, with each reign only seeing one successful defense. She initially lost her title to Rose Namajunas in the first round via knockout, but later reclaimed it with a dominant victory over Carla Esparza.
Zhang Weili’s Training with Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo
‘Magnum’ remains an impressive force in the ring, possessing impressive speed, power, and precision in her combinations. Notably, she has significantly improved her skills in wrestling and grappling, a result of her training with Henry Cejudo, a decorated Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling and a two-division UFC champion, who has held titles in both the 125-pound and 135-pound weight classes.
Witness Zhang Weili’s training session with Henry Cejudo:
Utilizing her newly acquired grappling skills, ‘Magnum’ was able to secure a submission victory over renowned wrestling prodigy Carla Esparza in the second round of UFC 281. She then went on to impress in an all-time great performance against Amanda Lemos at UFC 292.
