“Where was Jay-Z? Q-Tip’s Absence?”: Fan Reactions to Fat Joe Headlining World Series 3
On Monday, Bronx rapper Joseph Antonio Cartagena, popularly known as Fat Joe, took the stage to kick off Game 3 of the MLB World Series for the New York Yankees, delivering renditions of his well-loved tracks “All The Way Up”and “Lean Back.”
Before the third game, Leslie Odom Jr. performed the national anthem, while during Game 2, Ice Cube entertained fans by performing his iconic songs “It Was a Good Day”and “Bow Down”for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, Fat Joe’s inclusion didn’t sit well with some fans, who took to social media to express their discontent, questioning why the Yankees didn’t opt for more A-list rappers like Jay-Z or Q-Tip instead.
Others were particularly frustrated, given that the Yankees ended up losing to the Dodgers with a score of 2-4.
One user took a trip down memory lane, recalling Alicia Keys and Jay-Z’s memorable performance of “Empire State of Mind”at Yankee Stadium during Game 2 of the 2009 World Series, suggesting that Fat Joe’s performance was a “downgrade”in comparison.
Numerous individuals humorously placed the blame for the Yankees’ defeat squarely on Fat Joe’s shoulders.
David Ortiz, a former MLB player, commented on the crowd’s mixed response to Fat Joe’s performance during a discussion with Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez after the game:
“When Fat Joe came out, the crowd’s body language was something else; it felt like we were at a funeral. I was asking myself, ‘What’s happening here?’”
He further emphasized:
“Fans need to keep their energy up until the very last out… even when that home run was hit.”
