The Herald of Zakarum is a unique shield crafted for Paladins in Diablo 4, serving dual purposes as both a defensive mechanism and an offensive asset. While its offensive capabilities may not be immediately evident, understanding the shield’s full potential reveals its significance in various Paladin builds. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore effective strategies for farming the Herald of Zakarum, its functionalities, and how to optimize your build around it.
How to Farm the Herald of Zakarum in Diablo 4

The Herald of Zakarum can be obtained by defeating several formidable bosses in the game, specifically Andariel, Duriel, and the Harbinger of Hatred. These encounters unlock once you reach Torment 1 difficulty. Although you can challenge these bosses at any time, acquiring loot from their tables requires you to gather specific materials:
- Andariel: 3 Pincushioned Dolls (dropped by Lord Zir/Beast in Ice)
- Duriel: 3 Mucus-Slicked Eggs (dropped by Grigoire/Varshan)
- Harbinger of Hatred: 3 Abhorrent Hearts (dropped by Urivar)
While all three bosses share similar loot tables, our extensive farming of Andariel yielded multiple Heralds of Zakarum drops. If you’re struggling to secure drops from Duriel or the Harbinger of Hatred, consider prioritizing Andariel instead.
Additionally, Belial can also drop a Herald of Zakarum, but only if you defeat him after collecting treasure hoards from one of the previously mentioned bosses or within his own lair when selecting loot from those bosses. To summon him, you’ll need 2 Betrayer’s Husks, which can be acquired by defeating Belial in ambushes.
Unique Effects of the Herald of Zakarum

- Ignores Durability Loss
- Increases Ranks to Core Skills
- Enhances Chance for Retribution to Deal Double Damage
- Boosts Armor
- Increases Maximum Life
The shield synergizes well with the Paladin’s Retribution mechanic, causing Thorns damage to pulse around your character upon blocking attacks, which is classified as a Juggernaut Skill.
While it may not feature complex mechanics like some other Paladin uniques, the Herald of Zakarum offers substantial boosts to essential combat stats, making it a valuable asset.
Recent changes introduced in Diablo 4 Season 11 allow players to stack Armor beyond 1000. Although there are diminishing returns on actual defense value, accumulating substantial Armor remains beneficial, especially when combined with the Paladin’s Legendary Aspects and Paragon Nodes.
For instance, the Legendary Castle Paragon Node enhances your offensive capabilities based on a percentage of your Armor, enabling Paladins to excel in both tanking and damage dealing. Consequently, the Herald of Zakarum is compatible with nearly any Paladin build that incorporates a shield.
