WhatsApp has rolled out an exciting new update (25.28.74) for iOS users, now available through the App Store. This update introduces a secure message translation feature that allows users to translate messages into 21 different languages across individual chats, group conversations, and channels. The feature is set to gradually become accessible to a broader audience over the coming weeks.

Enhanced User Experience for iOS

This latest update positions the iOS version of WhatsApp ahead of its Android counterpart, which previously incorporated this feature in the beta release 2.25.12.25. Users will now enjoy a more unified experience, prioritizing functionality and ease of use.

Privacy-Centric Translation Method

One of the standout features of this translation capability is its on-device processing using downloaded language packs. This approach not only enhances user privacy but also ensures that translations can be accessed without internet connectivity. By processing translations locally, WhatsApp ensures that no messages are shared with third parties, including Apple and Meta, preserving the confidentiality of user conversations.

How the Translation Feature Works

Translations are executed using Apple’s own APIs, which allows for rapid response times. Users will see translations appear instantly beneath the original message. The process begins when a user selects a message and taps the “Translate”option in the context menu. WhatsApp’s system then automatically detects the original language and translates it into the user’s selected target language.

Language Support and Requirements

The breadth of supported languages includes popular options such as Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Russian, and many others, including Chinese (both Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Japanese, and Korean. To access this feature, users must have at least iOS 17.4 installed, as this version introduced the Translation API. This API allows WhatsApp to maintain the encryption of messages while integrating the translation service without sending data to external servers.
