Recap of Season 5
Guillermo’s short-lived transformation into a vampire
Guillermo has always aspired to become a vampire. However, his goal was complicated by his connection to Nandor, who hesitated to turn him due to Guillermo’s lineage as a descendant of the renowned vampire hunter, Abraham Van Helsing, from Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Despite this, Guillermo remained eager to join the ranks of the undead rather than stay merely a “familiar.” In a surprising turn, season 5 granted his desire, although it was Derek, rather than Nandor, who facilitated this transformation.
The Guide revealed this pivotal event in episode 9, which left Nandor feeling betrayed and vengeful. However, he soon recognized Guillermo’s worth as a close friend and ultimately chose reconciliation over violence.
As the season drew to a close, it became apparent that Guillermo was not fully transformed into a vampire; while he exhibited some undead traits, remnants of his humanity persisted. In the finale, when Nandor inquired about Guillermo’s state, Guillermo expressed a desire to revert to his human form. Nandor fulfilled this wish by staking Derek, returning Guillermo to his human existence.
Derek’s own transformation journey
Derek served as the vehicle for Guillermo’s long-held dream of vampirism. However, season 5 highlighted that Guillermo was not prepared for such a change; he could drink blood offered by others but lacked the will to kill a living victim.
Consequently, Nandor attempted a ritual to revert Guillermo back to human status, necessitating the stake through Derek, a task he struggled to execute, leading Nandor to take action instead.
After the resurrection ritual, Guillermo and Laszlo brought Derek to a necromancer named Wallace, who then brought Derek back as a zombie. Although Derek faced challenges in communication as a zombie, Topher, another undead, reassured them that Derek would soon adapt.
The Guide’s troubled situation
The Guide has been one of the most fascinating figures in What We Do in the Shadows, making enigmatic appearances throughout the series. Season 5 was no exception.
The group of vampires typically dismissed the Guide, referred to as the “Floating Woman.” Nevertheless, she sought vengeance in season 5, luring them to a location known as Morrigan Manor, where she ensnared them in silver cages.
She made an exception for Guillermo, noting his consistent politeness towards her. The situation was ultimately resolved when the vampires convinced her that their actions were merely a result of their nature as vampires, not an intentional offense.
This explanation appeased the Guide, leaving her future interactions with the group in season 6 open to speculation.
Be sure to catch the first three episodes of What We Do in the Shadows season 6 on FX when it premieres on October 21, 2024.
