What positions do the Chargers need to draft? Exploring Los Angeles team needs in 2024 NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Chargers, who had a disappointing 5-12 record in 2023, will be relying on the draft to address crucial gaps in the team. Luckily, their ample draft resources will allow them to fill some of those gaps.

The Bolts will have ample flexibility in the 2024 NFL draft as they have been awarded eight draft picks. According to reports, they may choose to trade up or down in order to acquire additional draft assets. However, it is crucial for the franchise to focus on strengthening their roster in key positions such as wide receiver, running back, cornerback, and offensive tackle in preparation for the 2024 season.

Analyzing the Los Angeles Chargers’ Draft Needs for the 2024 NFL Season

1) Quarterback

Despite the presence of Quentin Johnston, Josh Palmer, Derius Davis, and Simi Fehoko, the Los Angeles Chargers’ wide receiver group requires reinforcement after the departure of Mike Williams.

Luckily for the Bolts, there is a plethora of elite wide receivers in this year’s draft pool. At the top of the list is Marvin Harrison Jr., who has consistently been praised as one of the most exceptional receiving prospects in recent memory.

2) Quarterback

Despite concerns surrounding Los Angeles’ running game over the last two seasons, Austin Ekeler stood out in 2022 with impressive personal records as both a receiver and runner. However, in 2023, the experienced running back failed to match his previous success, scoring only five rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown, a significant decrease from his double digit totals in 2022.

With Ekeler no longer in the equation, it is likely that the Chargers will choose a running back in the draft. At this point, it remains uncertain which draft pick they will use to fill the void.

3) Cornerback Position in American Football

It has been some time since the defense of Los Angeles has reached a satisfactory level. Asante Samuel Jr. stands out as the only playmaker in the team’s secondary. Deane Leonard and Ja’Sir Taylor do not possess the required experience to be starting in games.

Despite recently acquiring Kristian Fulton, the Chargers may still be interested in adding young and explosive playmakers to their struggling cornerback group. These players could inject vital energy and provide much-needed support to the team.

4) Left Tackle and Right Tackle

In order for the Chargers to effectively execute their offensive strategy in 2024, they will need a proficient right tackle who excels at run-blocking. Quarterback Justin Herbert relies on having ample time and space to execute accurate deep throws, making an improved offensive line crucial for his success.

Joe Alt, who currently plays for Notre Dame, could potentially be a valuable asset to join Rashawn Slater at offensive tackle for the upcoming season.
