Since the launch of ChatGPT, we have officially entered the era of AI. Nowadays, the release of an AI tool hardly generates any excitement unless it is truly exceptional. However, the progress of AI is not confined to just software. Just a few months ago, companies like Intel, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and AMD started discussing the concept of an AI-powered PC. But what does this mean exactly? Let’s delve deeper.

At the CES 2024, Microsoft has recently introduced a set of criteria that will determine the eligibility of a PC to be classified as an AI PC. As per Microsoft’s standards, in order to qualify, a PC must possess an NPU, CPU, and GPU, as well as have access to Copilot and be equipped with the physical Copilot Key.

Just a few days ago, Microsoft released the latest Surface laptops and tablets, which also include all of these features.

Some examples of processors with an integrated NPU, CPU, and GPU include Intel Core Ultra, AMD’s Ryzen 8000G, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite.

At its most technical level, an AI PC stands out due to its inclusion of an NPU (Neural Processing Unit).

An NPU is crucial because, until recently, most modern PCs were equipped with only a CPU and GPU. As a result, the GPU has been responsible for handling AI tasks. However, with the addition of an NPU, a specialized chip specifically designed for handling artificial intelligence and machine learning tasks, the GPU is able to focus on other tasks.

An NPU is capable of performing various AI tasks, including but not limited to blurring the background in video calls and identifying objects in photos and videos for editing purposes.

An AI PC, equipped with an NPU, would have the capability to process certain AI tasks locally rather than relying on external cloud services. This would allow for the completion of these tasks even without an Internet connection. While this may not have a significant impact on average users, it would be particularly beneficial for businesses that have concerns about privacy and are hesitant to use AI technology.

To put it simply, many users are not pleased with the mandatory inclusion of the Copilot key on the keyboard. They believe it is a familiar tactic from the company, where they attempt to force something onto consumers before proving its value, which may lead to a negative reaction.

It is not considered essential to daily life, so much so that people would require a designated key to access it quicker. In fact, many individuals tend to disregard it and fear that the key would only cause Copilot to become a nuisance if pressed accidentally.

Despite not being an immediate success, Microsoft remains optimistic that Copilot will eventually become an indispensable tool for users. This could potentially happen with the upcoming launch of Windows 12, which is set to heavily incorporate AI capabilities.

Therefore, any PC that includes an NPU for handling tasks can be considered an AI PC, regardless of whether it meets Microsoft’s requirements for OEMs.

What capabilities does an AI PC currently possess? Currently, an AI PC has limited capabilities. However, as we move towards a future that prioritizes AI and more developers incorporate AI into their applications, the capabilities of AI PCs will expand.

It is advisable to consider if purchasing an AI PC at this moment is the right decision. If your sole reason for wanting an AI PC is because of its advanced AI capabilities, it would be more prudent to wait. However, if you are in need of a new PC regardless, opting for one with an NPU that is future-proofed would be a wise decision.
