Investigations, as reported by CBS News, revealed that during questioning, Alex’s family disclosed her struggles with substance abuse and depression. Diving deeper into the investigation, forensic teams uncovered critical evidence underneath the victim’s body: a metal component linked to a damaged bathroom lock. This led to the reevaluation of the suicide theory, prompting detectives to suspect that Ecker had broken in and shot Alexandra Pennig. As per earlier claims, he stated he washed his hands before calling 911, yet responders noted that the sink was dry upon arrival, adding to the suspicion.

Although Matthew Ecker maintained his innocence, he was charged with second-degree murder on February 16, 2024, based on circumstantial evidence. Reports from Fergus Now indicate that Ecker was sentenced to 30 years behind bars on April 4, 2024.
