“Whaaaat?” – Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian reacts to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suffering shock defeat in Municipal elections

The recent defeat of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the municipal elections came as a surprise to Serena Williams’ husband, who expressed his astonishment.

This news is especially important for Ohanian because of his Armenian background and his vocal condemnation of Turkey’s backing of Azerbaijan in the ongoing conflict with Armenia.

In the past, Turkey has provided both moral and diplomatic support for Azerbaijan. This assistance has grown in importance in recent times, as Turkey has played a crucial role in the ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This has included conducting joint military exercises and utilizing Turkish-made drones in the conflict.

In the recent municipal elections on March 31, the AK Party, led by Erdogan, was overtaken by the main opposition, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), for the first time. As of the time of writing, the AK Party had garnered 35.9% of the votes while the CHP was leading with 37.3%.

This loss is considered a significant obstacle for Erdogan and his party, who have held control for over twenty years. The outcome of the election solidifies Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as the primary challenger to the president.

Ohanian announced Erdogan’s loss on X (previously known as Twitter) on Sunday, March 31. He expressed his astonishment by stating:

Despite the tense relations between Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian has expressed his support for Armenia’s potential bid to become a member of the European Union.

Despite historically being aligned with Russia, Armenia’s relationship with Turkey has been strained due to Turkey’s support of Azerbaijan and denial of the Armenian Genocide. In recent years, Armenia has been shifting its focus towards diversifying its alliances and strengthening its ties with Western countries.

In a recent interview with a Turkish channel, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan revealed that Armenia is currently considering the possibility of joining the EU (via Reuters.com).

On Friday, March 8, Ohanian announced on his X (formerly Twitter) account that Armenia is considering a bid for EU membership.

“WOW! Turkey/Azerbaijan want to finish their genocide so badly — that will be significantly harder if Armenia joins the EU. I wonder what the sentiment of Armenians is on this…”Ohanian wrote.
