We Were Kings is a gripping Mexican crime drama series created by Leticia López Margalli. Directed by Pepe Valle and Mauricio Lule, this compelling show made its debut on Netflix on September 25, 2024.

The narrative follows Javo, Mike, and Santos, who share a tumultuous childhood in a barrio of Mexico City. Malena, who is Santos’ mother, also serves as a godmother to Javo and Mike; complications arise when both brothers develop romantic feelings for her. Javo ends up entering into a romance with Malena, leading to a tragic confrontation with Santos, who reacts violently upon discovering their relationship. In a disastrous turn of events, Santos is fatally shot during the conflict.

Javo Comes Clean to His Family at the Conclusion of We Were Kings

The series intricately weaves themes of family, friendship, secrets, and their repercussions. Set against the backdrop of a Mexico City barrio, We Were Kings follows two brothers, Mike and Javo, alongside their childhood friend Santos. Mike serves as a police officer, with Santos training under him to assist his mother, Malena, in settling a daunting debt of two hundred thousand pesos.

Javo commits car thefts with his uncle Taiguer, who is associated with crime boss Venegas. Javo and Malena’s secret romance is threatened when Santos discovers their liaison, resulting in a confrontation where Santos is killed by an accidental gunshot fired by Javo. To cover up the truth, Javo convinces Malena and Mike that Santos was the victim of a mugging.

In the series finale, Mike urges Javo to confess his sins to the family. Javo ultimately admits the circumstances surrounding Santos’s death and his affiliations with criminal elements.

Heidi’s Baby Is Santos’ in We Were Kings

At the start of the series, Mike and Javo’s sister Heidi is expecting a child as she prepares for medical school post-delivery. By the end, she reveals to Malena that the real father of her son, Santitos, is Santos.

In a poignant final scene at Santos’ grave, the family gathers as Heidi introduces her son to his father, eliciting shock followed by acceptance from the family members.

Mike Offers to Be a Father to Malena’s Son

The central plot of We Were Kings revolves around the illicit relationship between Javo and Malena. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Mike also harbored feelings for Malena but chose not to act on them. This complicates their relationships further when the affair between Javo and Malena is uncovered.

As the investigation into Santos’s death progresses, Mike discovers Javo’s involvement. Pressured to reveal the truth, Javo confesses his misdeeds to his family. After receiving a promotion, Mike presents Malena with a forensic report indicating that Santos was responsible for his own death—an accident resulting from his actions.

Despite this revelation, Malena holds Javo accountable for Santitos’ death, believing he should have been honest about their affair. In the series’ climax, by Santitos’ grave, Mike proposes to care for Malena’s child as a father figure.

In the subsequent scene, Javo returns to Santos’ grave, expressing his remorse for the secrets he has kept. He uses spray paint to deface the grave with his graffiti, symbolizing his internal turmoil.

Although there’s been no official announcement for a second season of We Were Kings, the conclusion leaves tantalizing possibilities regarding Javo’s future and the unresolved dynamics between Malena and the brothers. This leaves fans eagerly anticipating potential developments if Netflix decides to renew the series.
