WATCH: Why Goldberg’s WWE Return Actually FAILED
Goldberg is widely recognized as a top name in the wrestling world. He first burst onto the scene in 1997 with his debut in WCW, where he quickly established himself as a dominant force and achieved an impressive streak of 173 consecutive victories. Although his tenure with WWE from 2003 to 2004 was relatively short, it left a lasting impression. However, his final match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 20, which occurred just before he left the company, was widely regarded as underwhelming by fans and critics alike.
Therefore, upon his return in 2016, fans eagerly anticipated a fitting farewell for the Hall of Famer. He emerged victorious over Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam and claimed the Universal Championship from Kevin Owens at Fastlane 2017, a controversial choice made in order to set up his rematch against Brock for the title at WrestleMania 33, which he ultimately lost. This could have been the perfect send-off for him.
Despite receiving criticism for his performances, WWE continued to feature him in major events. However, his matches gradually declined in quality. This was evident when he faced The Undertaker at Super Showdown 2019, which was heavily panned by fans. He did manage to redeem himself with a entertaining match against Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam 2019. However, in 2020, he once again received backlash when he defeated The Fiend for the Universal Championship.
Goldberg’s contract with WWE expired after his final match against Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber 2022.
