Microsoft has announced that it is actively developing a movable taskbar for Windows 11, bearing resemblance to what was available in Windows 10. Currently, Microsoft is conducting internal tests on this movable taskbar, with indications that a rollout for Windows Insiders is imminent. Preceding this launch, a Microsoft engineer shared a demonstration video on X, showcasing an early rendition of the feature. It is essential to clarify a few technical aspects regarding the video:

The demonstration was conducted within a virtual machine operating an internal build of Windows 11, thus displaying some unfinished animations and quirks in functionality.

Despite mixed sentiments surrounding Windows 11, user feedback has predominantly spotlighted two key requests: the return of the movable taskbar, which disappeared upon the OS’s 2021 launch, and the option to resize the taskbar to a smaller profile.

As part of a significant Windows overhaul planned for 2026, Microsoft aims to transition the Start menu to WinUI from React Native, enhance dark mode functionality, update legacy dialogs, streamline File Explorer, and extend the pause functionality for Windows updates beyond the typical five-week duration.
