WATCH: Jalen Brunson stares down Victor Wembanyama after he throws Knicks star’s 61-point ball
On Friday night, the game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs featured an impressive matchup between Jalen Brunson and Victor Wembanyama. Both players put on a stellar performance, but the Texans ultimately came out on top with a final score of 130-126.
Despite Brunson’s career-best 61 points, the Spurs managed to defeat the Knicks in overtime thanks to Victor Wembanyama’s impressive performance. Wembanyama’s career-high 40 points, along with 20 rebounds and seven assists, were crucial in securing the win for the Spurs.
Following the end of the game, Wembanyama tossed the ball into the stands, and the camera then captured Brunson looking displeased.
Despite his impressive performance, Brunson was unable to surpass Carmelo Anthony’s franchise record of 62 points achieved on Jan. 24, 2014. In the final moments of overtime, he had the opportunity to give the Knicks the lead with a 3-pointer, but unfortunately missed with just 5.4 seconds remaining.

Despite his career-high performance, Brunson acknowledged that the loss had lessened the importance of the game.
“It’s great, but it’s washed out with the window with the loss,” Brunson said. “So, it doesn’t really matter.”
Wembanyama’s impressive performance led the Spurs to secure their first three-game winning streak of the season.
In addition to his exceptional performance, he also made NBA history by becoming just the second player to record at least 40 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and a block, while also making four 3-pointers.
DeMarcus Cousins is the only other player to achieve the feat, accomplishing 44 points, 23 rebounds, 10 assists, four steals, one block and five made 3-pointers in January 2018.
Victor Wembanyama reflects on his rookie season in the NBA
Despite Victor Wembanyama’s arrival not resulting in an immediate transformation of the Spurs into a playoff contender, his rise as one of the league’s top players and defenders is promising for the team’s future.
Wembanyama expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to face the NBA’s best players every night after the game.
“I’ve never seen so much greatness before,” Wembanyama said. “The season has been going on for just some months. I’ve just witnessed so much greatness and I want to be a part of it.”
I always wanted to, but more and more seeing that I’m already able to compete with those guys. I’m not near, but I’m on the right path. I know it and I’m going to get there and soon.”
The Spurs currently hold a record of 18-56 this season with eight games remaining. In order to avoid surpassing the franchise’s previous worst record of 20-62, set in 1997, they must secure three more wins. However, it may prove challenging as six of their remaining eight games are against teams headed for the playoffs.
