As a devoted fan of shōnen anime, I couldn’t have hoped for a better year than 2024. This year’s lineup of shōnen titles has been nothing short of phenomenal. It stands out particularly for two reasons: the emergence of exciting new series that introduced imaginative powers and breathtaking transformations, alongside the return of some beloved classics that have kept audiences eagerly tuned in.
2024: An Unbelievable Year for Shōnen
Shōnen Fans Were Thrilled
The 2024 shōnen lineup was overwhelming in the best possible way. With just under 2, 000 hours of anime watched according to MyAnimeList, I’ve grown accustomed to seasons that offer perhaps 2 or 3 standout shōnen titles. However, 2024 shatters that norm, as each season boasted at least three top-tier series. This abundance truly catered to shōnen enthusiasts, delivering an ample supply of thrilling content.
Working at Screen Rant last year fueled my appreciation even further. The sheer volume of fantastic series compelled me to dive into each one—primarily under the pretense of “work.”While I indeed benefited professionally by honing my understanding of anime, the primary allure remained the remarkable shows available. Having watched seasonal anime for over eight years, I can confidently state that there has never been a year quite like 2024. The only comparable experience was in 2020 during the pandemic, but that was mainly due to being confined indoors rather than an abundance of exceptional content.
Return of Classic Shōnen Series
The Glorious Comeback of Classics
As an avid follower of various shōnen series, I was ecstatic about the impressive returns in 2024. Many of my long-time favorites made a splash once again. Notably, some of the most memorable moments emerged from established series that have captivated audiences for years, proving they can still deliver compelling narratives. Two moments in particular stood out to many fans.
First up, from the visually stunning Demon Slayer, was the finale of the Hashira Training Arc. Although not the most action-packed installment, the climactic moments were nothing short of extraordinary. The animation quality soared as Ubuyashiki detonated one of the most intricately animated bombs in anime history, while the Hashira finally confronted the menacing Muzan Kibutsuji. Witnessing Gyomei successfully fend him off for the group to converge was thrilling, especially with Tanjiro poised and ready for battle.
Secondly, in My Hero Academia, the segment known as “Coffin in the Sky” showcased both Bakugo and Midoriya at their very best. Bakugo’s explosive movement through his attacks was mesmerizing, while Midoriya’s powerful entrance set the stage for an unforgettable battle sequence within the series.
The Impact of New Series

However, the excitement of 2024 was not limited to just nostalgia-laden returns. The year was enriched by a plethora of thrilling new shōnen series that captivated viewers. Key newcomers prominently featured included Solo Leveling, a contender for one of the greatest anime ever; Kaiju No.8, a breakout hit; and Wind Breaker, an all-action spectacle.
Solo Leveling has emerged as a game-changer for the genre in 2024. The story follows Jinwoo, a once-weak protagonist, as he rises through the ranks to become one of the strongest fighters, exemplifying determination and grit. Its compelling narrative and dynamic animation have made it a standout series of the year.
Likewise, both Kaiju No.8 and Wind Breaker delivered jaw-dropping fight sequences and offered rich character development alongside tantalizing worlds to explore. Each of these series not only succeeded last year but are now poised for additional seasons, promising viewers further excitement.
A Peerless Year for Shōnen Anime
2024: Shōnen Anime at Its Zenith
Undoubtedly, 2024 stands as a pinnacle year for shōnen anime. With the introduction of fresh hits such as Dragon Ball DAIMA, alongside the much-anticipated returns of franchise giants like Bleach and One Piece, it’s clear that this year has offered shōnen enthusiasts an unparalleled experience. While there have been many great years for shōnen, 2024 clearly eclipses them all.
Looking ahead, 2025 holds promise with series like Solo Leveling Season 2, Sakamoto Days, and new episodes of Dr. Stone slated for release. Yet, as we look toward the upcoming year, it seems highly unlikely that 2025 will outshine the monumental offerings of 2024, which defined shōnen fandom.
