Waltzing with Brando: Essential Insights and Overview

Billy Zane will portray Marlon Brando in the anticipated biopic Waltzing with Brando, which is set to debut at this year’s Torino Film Festival in Italy. Zane is widely recognized for his role as the antagonist Cal Hockley in the iconic film Titanic, featuring the love story of Jack and Rose.

This biographical film explores Brando’s life as he prepared for two of his most significant films, The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris. During this period, he collaborated with Bernard Judge, an architect, to construct his dream tropical escape in Tahiti.

Directed and penned by Bill Fishman, known for works such as Tapeheads, My Dinner with Jimi, and Car 54, Where Are You?, the film features a talented cast including Tia Carrere and Richard Dreyfuss.

Plot Overview of Waltzing with Brando

Fishman’s screenplay is inspired by Judge’s memoir titled Waltzing with Brando: Planning a Paradise in Tahiti. The narrative chronicles the ambitions of Brando and Judge as they set about developing the retreat in Tahiti, starting from the selection of Judge—an idealistic architect based in Los Angeles.

This film aims to illustrate how the Oscar-winning Brando persuaded Judge to abandon his stable life in Los Angeles to create the world’s first ecologically sustainable retreat on Tetiaroa, a previously uninhabited island in Tahiti. Regarding the project, Zane expressed to Deadline on May 15, 2024:

“It serves as a love letter to Tahiti, to him [Brando], and to his passions.”

The plot unfolds prior to Brando’s iconic role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, showcasing how he embraced the character of the aging Don Vito Corleone to financially support his vision for the Tetiaroa project alongside Judge.

Filming Locations for Waltzing with Brando

The majority of this upcoming biopic was filmed on Tetiaroa, providing a glimpse into the lesser-known facets of Brando’s life away from Hollywood’s spotlight. Situated in French Polynesia, the atoll was once under royal family ownership before transitioning to private hands. In 1966, Marlon Brando finally secured a 99-year lease on Tetiaroa after multiple unsuccessful attempts, with aspirations to develop it into a natural sanctuary and an environmentally friendly resort.

The biopic is slated for its premiere at the Torino Film Festival in November.
