Lauryn Hill is once again facing criticism after making concertgoers wait until 3 a.m. local time for her show in Nairobi. According to AllHipHop, the concert was marred by sound issues that frustrated attendees.
On Sunday, September 29, Lauryn Hill was set to headline the second day of the Walker Town festival in Kenya’s capital. The delay angered fans, who took to social media to express their displeasure with the artist. The concert didn’t conclude until 5 a.m. local time, beginning two hours earlier.
Here are some notable reactions from X, formerly known as Twitter:
Another X user commented:
“The whole team is at fault. It’s best to hold EVERYONE accountable.”
“Waking up to hear that Lauryn Hill performed at 3 a.m. with very poor sound and that Nyashinki didn’t even perform makes me want to laugh,”added another tweet.
“Tonight in Walker Town, Lauryn Hill told Kenyans, ‘Ready or not, here I don’t come,’”noted a user.
Many fans who were eager to see Hill perform expressed their thoughts on X. One user wrote:
“We tried to stay, but sleep and work tomorrow had us walking out of the #WalkerTown concert.”
“I am about to leave now. It is f**** unacceptable,”exclaimed another netizen.
“Would have loved to attend this show, but given Lauryn Hill’s reputation, I didn’t think it would have been prudent to make that Nairobi trip,”commented one user.
The EABL Will Refund All Ticket Holders for the Second Day of the Event Featuring Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill has a history of making late appearances and even canceling shows at the last minute. Earlier this year, she and The Fugees abruptly canceled their North American leg of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Anniversary Tour shortly before it was meant to start.
At that time, Hill attributed the decline in ticket sales to negative media coverage and “clickbait headlines.”Pras also commented on the unexpected cancelation, stating to TMZ:
“I saved her reputation for 20 years by not telling my side of the story. But oops… the cat’s out of the bag.”
Regarding the recent delay at the Nairobi concert, the event organizers, The East African Breweries Limited (EABL), announced full refunds for ticket holders of the second day. On Monday, they released a statement citing heavy rains as the cause of disruption during the concert.
EABL stated:
“This resulted in the delayed performance by Miss Lauryn Hill and, regrettably, the cancellation of our brand partner Nyashinski’s performance, which deeply impacted the overall festival experience.”
They also expressed:
“This is a reflection of our commitment to fairness and respect for the trust you placed in us.”
The organizers apologized to all concertgoers eagerly anticipating the performances on that Sunday. However, this announcement did not deter frustrated fans from taking to social media to criticize the Ex-Factor singer.
