Microsoft Introduces Vocal Activation for Copilot on Windows 11

Microsoft is enhancing the Copilot app functionality on Windows 11, allowing users to interact more naturally with this AI-powered assistant. Reflecting features reminiscent of Cortana from Windows 10 and Windows Phone, the latest update enables users to engage with Copilot simply by saying, “Hey, Copilot!”

Seamless Interaction with Copilot Voice

This new voice command makes accessing Copilot Voice smoother, eliminating the need to physically interact with the device. Previously, users relied on the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut to launch the Copilot Voice feature. Now, the experience can be initiated effortlessly with one’s voice, promoting a more fluid workflow.

Copilot wake word: Windows Insiders can now invoke Copilot with the phrase “Hey, Copilot!”.This opt-in feature gives people a new way to easily start a conversation with Copilot Voice, anytime the feature is enabled, and their PC is unlocked. With this new hands-free experience, you can stay in your flow when you need answers to a question or just need someone to bounce an idea off of.

User Control and Privacy Considerations

While the convenience of voice activation is appealing, it raises privacy concerns for some users. To address these, Microsoft has made this feature an opt-in option; it will not be active by default. Users looking to enable this feature can easily do so via the app’s settings:

Launch the Copilot app and select your avatar located in the bottom-left corner.
Access the Settings menu and navigate to the Voice mode section.
Enable the option “Listen for ‘Hey, Copilot’ to start a conversation.”

Technical Aspects and User Experience

According to Microsoft, the wake word detection is processed on the device, ensuring that voice recordings are not sent to the cloud unless the “Hey, Copilot” mode is activated. Users will receive auditory feedback—such as a chime or a greeting—once Copilot Voice is engaged. Exiting this mode is straightforward; simply click the X or remain silent for a short duration.

Availability of the New Feature

The wake word functionality for Copilot is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders as part of version 1.25051.10.0 and newer. Given the nature of phased rollouts, the availability may vary, with some users receiving the update later than others.
