VMware Workstation 17.6.1 Released with Updates for Windows 11 24H2 and Additional Fixes
VMware has launched a minor update for its virtualization platform supporting both Windows and Linux users. The new version, Workstation Pro 17.6.1, offers several crucial fixes and is now ready for downloading.
This update ensures that VMware Workstation accurately identifies Windows 11 version 24H2 images. The preceding version, 17.6.0, incorrectly recognized 24H2 ISO files as Windows Server 2025, automatically initiating the Easy Install process. In addition, developers have addressed update issues encountered on non-English systems and resolved two additional bugs.
For more details, check out the release notes:
- Virtual machine creation from Windows 11 24H2 ISO images has been corrected in this version. Previously, attempting to create a virtual machine using a Windows 11 24H2 ISO would incorrectly prompt a Windows Server 2025 ISO file recognition.
- Unrecoverable error when powering on a virtual machine presents issues with VMware Workstation 17.6, specifically relating to the (svga) svga Exception 0xc0000005 error. This occurs when either the 3D graphics feature is disabled or if hardware acceleration is enabled for all virtual machine consoles in the settings.
- Installation and upgrades on non-English systems continue to pose a challenge with VMware Workstation 17.6. Attempts to install or upgrade on host systems configured in languages other than English result in an MSI pop-up error.
- CentOS 9 Stream kernel versions over 5.14.0-432 are incompatible with Workstation Pro 17.6 for hosting purposes.
Current known issues for VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.1 are as follows:
Problems with multi-monitor setups
In certain configurations involving various hardware, the multi-monitor functionality may not perform optimally, leading to scenarios where the setup reverts to a single monitor or where cycling through different screens fails.
Workaround: None available.
