Born in Bulgaria, Antonov made significant strides in both film and video games, even authoring a graphic novel titled The Colony: A Structure Celebrating the Triumphs of Technology, which narrates the enthralling journey of Gabriel Duban as he uncovers the mysteries of a forgotten city in an empire rich with adventure prior to the era of space exploration.

Antonov was instrumental in shaping the iconic visuals of Half-Life 2, a title widely recognized as one of the hallmarks of video gaming history. The game spawned two episodic follow-ups in 2006 and 2007, and the franchise was further revitalized with Half-Life: Alyx in 2020. Speculation about Half-Life 3 has reignited in 2025, partly due to a recent documentary highlighting early concepts for a potential third installment, bringing forth a wave of excitement amid persistent rumors and misconceptions.

The announcement of Antonov’s passing on February 16, 2025, was made through social media by fellow industry professionals. An archivist recently shared leaked concept art from unfinished projects, including Half-Life 2: Episode 3, possibly overseen by Antonov in his capacity as art director. Marc Laidlaw, a former Valve colleague, took to Instagram to commemorate Antonov, stating, “I don’t have details. Just sadness. Brilliant and original.
