VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) is setting a new benchmark for performance in the realm of high-end displays with their latest enhancements to the ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black standards. These updates are tailored for the evolving needs of gamers and content creators, aiming to significantly upgrade visual experiences through advanced metrics.
VESA Unveils Advanced Performance Standards at CES 2025
At the upcoming CES 2025, VESA will introduce upgraded versions of their ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black standards. These standards play a critical role in defining display technology, and with rapid advancements in the sector, VESA has responded by refining these guidelines to accommodate next-generation displays that promise to elevate user experience.
The enhancements include multiple performance tiers within both the ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black frameworks. Industry leaders such as GIGABYTE, MSI, LG, and Samsung are integrating these standards into their latest high-end displays, which cater specifically to the needs of gamers and creative professionals. According to Roland Wooster, the Chairman of the VESA task group:
…The ability for OLED displays to achieve 1000 nit peak brightness for HDR content represents a significant breakthrough for the technology and a key cross-over point into content creation applications.
By adding a new 1000 performance tier to our DisplayHDR True Black standard, VESA assures consumers that certified products have successfully passed a robust set of test criteria and represent a premium standard for OLED HDR displays.
The DisplayHDR True Black standard is set to feature a new 1000-Luminance performance level, specifically designed for OLED displays, which typically face challenges in achieving high brightness. With these advancements, HDR-enabled OLED displays will experience a significant boost in visual clarity, making dynamic content more immersive and vibrant.
Introducing New ClearMR Tiers for Enhanced Motion Clarity
In addition to the DisplayHDR True Black updates, VESA is rolling out three new performance tiers for the ClearMR standard: ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000. These advancements are critical in reducing motion blur on displays—a vital factor for maintaining clarity during fast-paced action scenes.
The ClearMR standard provides users with a quantifiable measure of motion blur for displays certified by VESA, making it easier for consumers to select products that offer high performance in dynamic visual scenarios.
Multiple manufacturers are already embracing these new standards in their upcoming enthusiast-grade displays. Notably, GIGABYTE is set to launch its flagship gaming models in 2025 featuring the latest ClearMR standard. Other brands like MSI, LG, and Samsung have also announced their forthcoming models, such as the LG 27GX79A, marking it as the first OLED gaming monitor to achieve VESA ClearMR 21000 certification.
