Steam Store Enhancements: A Fresh Look and Improved Features

The Steam store has recently undergone a significant upgrade, aiming to elevate user experience across the platform. This latest update introduces a streamlined interface specifically designed to enhance the Steam player on the store pages, making actions more accessible and responsive for users.

Adaptive User Interface for Seamless Navigation

One of the standout features of this upgrade is an adaptive user interface that adjusts based on the device in use. Whether accessing Steam from a desktop computer, a handheld device like the Steam Deck, a smartphone, or using the Big Picture Mode, users will benefit from a cohesive and intuitive layout.

Interactive Video Previews

Another exciting addition is the introduction of interactive preview images for video trailers. Users can now hover their cursor (or touch) over the seek bar to glimpse different segments of the video. Moreover, the video quality adapts in real-time, switching between resolutions of 360p, 480p, 720p, and 1080p based on network conditions and the size of the video player. Non-standard aspect ratio trailers are also properly scaled and centered for a better viewing experience.

Enhanced Streaming Technology for Smooth Playback

“Thanks to a change in the underlying video technology, you should see fewer pauses and hitches when jumping forward or backward in a video, ”explains Valve in the announcement blog post.“You will also see seamless transitions when pressing that full-screen button.”

In order to facilitate these improvements, Valve undertook the substantial task of re-encoding approximately 400, 000 trailers on the platform. However, the company has noted that it does not have access to the original files for some older trailers. As a result, classic titles like Portal will continue to feature lower-quality videos until those assets can be restored.

Future Updates on the Horizon

Additionally, it is essential to keep in mind that Valve is currently conducting tests for a complete redesign of the Steam store’s menu and search functionality. This could further enhance navigability and user experience on the platform. Stay tuned for updates regarding these developments!
