Enhancements to Google Sheets: The New Table Conversion Feature

Last year, Google launched an innovative “intelligent suggestion”feature in Sheets, designed to streamline the process of converting data into tables. This functionality appeared automatically when users selected a meaningful data range, prompting a “Convert to table”suggestion. Users also had the option to manually convert data by navigating to Format > Convert to table.

Integration of Gemini for Improved Usability

In a recent update, Google announced that it is enhancing this feature with the integration of Gemini. With this upgrade, once you accept the “Convert to table”suggestion, Gemini will not only format the data but also generate contextual table names, such as “Project_Status”or “Office_Expenses.”This addition significantly improves data referencing in formulas.

Dynamic Reference for Enhanced Efficiency

The ability to refer to tables with dynamic names simplifies the use of formulas. For example, instead of using =SUM(E2:E15), you can utilize a more descriptive reference like =SUM(Office_Expenses[Amount]). One of the key advantages is the dynamic nature of these references; they automatically adjust the range as rows are added or removed, enhancing flexibility in data management.

Control Over Features and Availability

If you find the new table suggestion feature isn’t to your liking, it can easily be disabled by navigating to Tools > Suggestion controls and unchecking “Enable table suggestions”.

Rollout Details

The rollout of this feature has begun for Google Workspace customers on Business Standard/Plus and Enterprise Standard/Plus plans. Additionally, those with a Google AI Pro and Ultra plan or specific Gemini Education add-ons can access it. Users who had previously subscribed to the now-retired Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise add-ons will also benefit from this upgrade.

For organizations utilizing Rapid Release domains, this feature is already rolling out. Meanwhile, users on Scheduled Release domains will see the rollout commence on September 12. It’s important to note that for access to this feature through Gemini, administrators must enable smart features and personalization settings in the Admin console.

Additional Gemini Features in Google Workspace

In addition to Google Sheets, Google has recently extended Gemini capabilities to Forms. Users creating forms will notice a new feature that suggests relevant questions after two initial questions have been entered. By clicking the “Suggest questions”button, Gemini evaluates the content and generates up to four additional questions for easy integration with a single click.
