Updates on the Glove Wrap After Shark Tank: What You Need to Know
Gavin Batarse’s Glove Wrap: A Shark Tank Triumph and Beyond
Since its inception, Shark Tank has offered a stage for aspiring entrepreneurs to showcase their groundbreaking ideas to potential investors. The show continues to inspire many, as highlighted in Season 15, Episode 3, which aired on October 13, 2023. This episode featured young innovator Gavin Batarse, who appeared alongside his family to present his product, Glove Wrap, designed to expedite the break-in process for baseball gloves.
Sealing the Deal with Sharks
The Batarse family sought a $50,000 investment in exchange for a 20% stake in their business. Ultimately, they struck a deal with Sharks Mark Cuban and Michael Rubin, who offered $50,000 for a slightly higher 22% equity in Glove Wrap.
A Product in Demand: Glove Wrap’s Market Expansion
Since their Shark Tank debut, Glove Wrap has grown immensely. Not only is it available on its official website, but the product can also be found in over 200 stores nationwide, including prominent retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Scheels. Notably, Glove Wrap has earned the distinction of being the official glove wrap for Major League Baseball (MLB).
The Inspiration Behind Glove Wrap
The conception of Glove Wrap traces back to Gavin’s personal struggle with his baseball glove. At just nine years old, he was frustrated by the difficulty of breaking in a new glove. Initially, his father, Jon Batarse, employed a traditional method using rubber bands to form a pocket in the glove; however, they ran out of bands.
“We used to use rubber bands, but we didn’t have enough. So Dad asked me to find a different way,” Gavin shared with the Daily Pilot.
Unable to discover a product that effectively addressed this common issue, the father-son duo decided to innovate and created Glove Wrap—a latex-free, thermoplastic elastomer band engineered to facilitate the break-in process of stiff baseball gloves.
A Successful Pitch and Investor Interest
During their Shark Tank pitch, Gavin, Jon, and his sister Morgan showcased the product’s ease of use. The process involved placing a baseball inside the glove, tightly wrapping it with the Glove Wrap band, and allowing it to set, thereby creating a functional pocket suitable for play.
While Kevin O’Leary opted not to invest—insisting on Gavin’s need to stay focused on his education—the Batarse family appealed to the Sharks based on their desire to balance entrepreneurship with schooling. Lori Greiner and Barbara Corcoran also chose to step back, believing that investors with a sports background would be more suitable.
However, Mark Cuban and Michael Rubin recognized the product’s potential, with Rubin drawing on his expertise in running Fanatics, a leading sports merchandise retailer. Their combined offer of $50,000 for 22% equity caught the family’s attention, leading to a successful partnership.
Post-Show Growth and Retail Presence
After appearing on Shark Tank, Glove Wrap experienced a surge in popularity, with significant increases in website traffic and sales. As of October 2024, the brand has amassed an impressive social media following, boasting 47.7K followers on Facebook and 86.6K on Instagram.
According to Jon Batarse, the brand transitioned from a modest home-based venture to a recognized name in the retail landscape, now proudly occupying shelves in national sporting goods chains. The product remains competitively priced at $19.99 on their website, ensuring accessibility for baseball enthusiasts.
Major League Baseball Partnership and Future Ambitions
Following their successful appearance, Glove Wrap’s trajectory continued to rise with a lucrative licensing deal with Major League Baseball, officially designating Glove Wrap as the MLB’s official glove wrap. This partnership has been highlighted on their social media pages, significantly enhancing brand visibility.
The Batarse family participated in MLB’s All-Star Week in Dallas, where they were featured in a Shark Tank retrospective segment. Their product’s endorsement by MLB has further amplified its social media presence, with videos demonstrating Glove Wrap garnering millions of views across platforms.
A special episode reflecting Glove Wrap’s journey aired on November 1 on ABC, showcasing the family’s entrepreneurial spirit and their drive toward future growth.
