NVIDIA is set to unveil its next-generation GeForce RTX 50 graphics cards, specifically the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, during CES 2025. Before the official announcement, there have been slight adjustments to their total board power (TBP) specifications.

Preliminary TBP for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series: RTX 5090 at 575W, RTX 5080 at 360W

The upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are part of the advanced Blackwell architecture, anticipated to make their debut at CES 2025. Recent leaks from Kopite7kimi and Hongxing2020 have provided updated details regarding their specifications.

Initial expectations suggested a TBP of 600W for the RTX 5090 and 400W for the RTX 5080; however, those estimates have been revised downward. Custom models may still push these values higher, but reference designs will feature these adjusted specifications. Below are the highlights of both GPUs.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090: Key Specifications

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 is positioned as the flagship card of this lineup. It is set to utilize the PG144/145-SKU30 PCB design and will feature the GB202-300-A1 GPU core. Notably, 170 out of the total 192 streaming multiprocessors (SMs) will be enabled, yielding 21,760 cores—an 11.4% reduction relative to the full capacity of 24,576. This decrement is slightly larger than the 11.1% reduction from the RTX 4090’s AD102 die.

On the memory front, the RTX 5090 will boast 32 GB of GDDR7 VRAM across a 512-bit interface, achieving speeds of 28 Gbps. This configuration helps deliver a staggering memory bandwidth of up to 1792 GB/s, enhanced further by an expanded L3 cache and innovative memory compression techniques.

The finalized TBP rating for the RTX 5090 stands at 575W. It’s important to note that this figure typically does not reflect actual gaming power consumption, which tends to be considerably lower. Recent leaks suggest a two-slot cooler design for the Founders Edition. Additionally, the RTX 5090 features a compact, densely-packed PCB design, employing a 16+6+7 phase layout and a new 14-layer configuration with advanced backdrill technology.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080: Overview

The RTX 5080 will utilize the PG144/147-SKU45 PCB, integrating the full GB203-400-A1 GPU die. This model will utilize all 84 SMs, equating to 10,752 cores, resulting in a significant 51% reduction in cores compared to the RTX 5090. This divergence is broader than the 40% difference seen between the RTX 4090 and 4080.

In terms of memory, the RTX 5080 will feature 16 GB of GDDR7, operating on a 256-bit bus—a configuration offering cutting-edge speeds of up to 32 Gbps, leading to a total bandwidth of 1024 GB/s (1 TB/s). With a TBP of 360W, this card represents a 12.5% increase over the RTX 4080 SUPER’s 320W rating. However, as with the RTX 5090, real power consumption under typical conditions is expected to be lower.

Both the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are poised to be the standout offerings in NVIDIA’s latest GPU lineup, set to launch by late January or early February. More detailed information is imminent as CES 2025 approaches.
