What has Matty Edgell, the winner of The Great British Bake Off Season 14, been up to?

Since his victory, Matty has taken the leap from teaching to focusing entirely on baking, engaging in partnerships with brands like Carnations and Nestlé. In Channel 4’s press release dated September 19, 2023, he is introduced as his “family’s designated baker,” and the release elaborates:

“Matty is the type of baker who swats up on online patisserie videos before bed. Now the family’s designated baker, he always has a list of cake requests for upcoming celebrations. He describes his style as rustic but neat, and his flavor preferences as quite traditional – he particularly loves chocolate, citrus, and nuts.”

During his interview with the BBC, the Great British Bake Off Season 14 winner shared the challenges of balancing baking with teaching, leading to his decision to pursue baking full-time. Matty expressed his gratitude for the numerous opportunities that are paving the way for his baking career. He stated,

“I have had loads of ‘pinch me’ moments. I got to work with West Ham as well, which was pretty cool. I thought my days of seeing myself on Sky Sports – that dream had long gone, but it happened. Bake Off gave me an opportunity to explore an avenue that was so far out of the equation. If I didn’t take it, I would forever look back and think what if so?”

Currently, Matty is busy establishing his “own brand and cake businesses.” He indicated a desire to return to reality television, whether it be a cooking or baking show. Additionally, he shared his plans to publish a baking book, saying:

“I think the next big thing that I’ve got my eyes on is a book. It’s still a work in progress, and I’m hopeful of something coming up soon. I found it fascinating – being inside the TV and seeing how it all comes together was mind blowing.”

Feeling “apprehensive yet excited” about this new chapter, Matty expressed his gratitude toward his former students and school colleagues.
