The Penguin has captured widespread attention following its exceptional run, which recently earned Colin Farrell a Golden Globe award. As discussions about the show’s future intensify, many are curious whether it will extend beyond its initial limited series format, a topic various producers have recently commented on.
Serving as a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ critically acclaimed 2022 film The Batman, the series delves deeper into the narrative of Oswald Cobblepot, portrayed by Farrell, showcasing his ascent to becoming a notorious crime lord in the DC universe. The show stands out among comic book adaptations, achieving recognition in prestigious circles, garnering not only critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base but also multiple award nominations. Actors like Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, who plays Sofia Falcone, have received accolades for their performances, while the writing and production quality of the HBO series have been equally praised.
Insights on Season 2 from Producers
Recently, producers and cast members of The Penguin graced the Golden Globe Awards, where the series received three nominations. On the red carpet, showrunner Lauren LeFranc reflected on the series’ potential for expansion. Although originally conceived as a limited series, she did not dismiss the idea of further exploration of its storyline. “We were meant to be a limited series, so I’m really proud of the first season and the story that we made. There’s more stories to tell there, for sure, if we can find the right idea or the right characters,” she stated in an interview with Screen Rant.
Echoing LeFranc’s sentiments, Matt Reeves, the producer and director of The Batman, shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the future of the series hinges on both the development of a strong concept and the timing of their ongoing work on The Batman Part 2. “We are talking about doing another season… it’s really about coming up with the right idea and also about the timing… but we’re really excited about doing another season and we just have to figure out exactly the right idea,” he noted.
Furthermore, producer Dylan Clark elaborated in a conversation with TV Line, disclosing that “quiet conversations”regarding the future of the series with HBO are underway. “If we could come up with an idea for what a second season might be, there’s a chance that Casey Bloys and the HBO team would want to pursue that… There have been quiet conversations about that,” he revealed.

Despite being initially categorized as a limited series, the overwhelmingly positive reception could pave the way for additional seasons. While the first season concluded with satisfactory character arcs for Oswald Cobblepot and others, there remain untold stories that could be explored. Notably, Farrell is expected to reprise his role in The Batman Part 2, potentially setting the stage for further narrative development in a second season. Additionally, Milioti’s character, Sofia, has unresolved threads linked to her sister, Selina Kyle (played by Zoe Kravitz), which could lead to further exploration in the storyline.
As audiences express their desire for more content within Reeves’ expansive universe, The Penguin emerges as a pivotal platform for the continuation of rich, compelling stories.
The Penguin is now available for streaming on Max.
