With the buzz surrounding Wicked and its potential for Oscar nominations, many are eager to spotlight standout musicals this season. However, let me introduce you to a film that deserves your attention: the Irish hip-hop musical Kneecap. Not only is it a vibrant, comedic masterpiece, but it’s also positioning itself as a strong contender in the Oscar race. Excitingly, it will be available for streaming on Netflix soon!
How to Watch Kneecap
In January 2024, Kneecap made history as the first Irish language film to debut at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Following its theatrical release in August, it was selected as Ireland’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars. For those who missed its original run, fear not! The film will be available for streaming on Netflix, courtesy of Sony Pictures, on December 2, 2024.
What Is Kneecap About?
Set against the backdrop of post-Troubles Northern Ireland, Kneecap explores the cultural and social ramifications of the past while shining a light on the contemporary challenges faced by the Irish community. This biographical musical comedy-drama follows the rise of an Irish hip-hop trio, also named Kneecap, from West Belfast. Their music unexpectedly transforms them into influential figures within a civil rights movement.
However, their journey is fraught with complications. The trio finds themselves entangled in struggles with substance abuse and family issues, while also facing opposition from law enforcement and ideological adversaries. Their controversial lyrics spark further tensions, adding layers to the narrative.
This film marks the impressive debut of Rich Peppiatt (known for One Rogue Reporter ), who previously directed music videos for Kneecap. The band members—Liam Óg “Mo Chara” Ó Hannaidh, Naoise “Móglaí Bap” Ó Cairealláin, and JJ “DJ Próvaí” Ó Dochartaigh—star themselves, alongside a talented ensemble featuring Simone Kirby, Jessica Reynolds, Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, and Adam West. Notably, German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender joins the cast as Arlo Ó Cairelláin, a former paramilitary now living in hiding.
Why Is Kneecap Among the Year’s Best Musicals?
Visually stunning and vibrantly alive, Kneecap evokes the gritty aesthetic of renowned films such as Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting, while also incorporating the energetic flair of Guy Ritchie’s films and the comedic essence of Derry Girls. The performances grab your attention, the music is infectious, and the humor hits the mark—making it a compelling cinematic experience.
I had the pleasure of experiencing Kneecap at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in October 2024, where it premiered in the World Cinema section. Despite the fatigue that often accompanies film festivals, this film jolted me awake from the very first scene, thanks to its captivating montage. With an impressive 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.1 on Letterboxd, Kneecap is a must-watch that could convert even the most skeptical of viewers.
Don’t miss the chance to see this unique film!
