A New Short Story for Fans

Demon king and Frieren team

Longtime followers of the Frieren series may recognize Hachimoku’s previous contributions, notably the prequel novel titled Shōsetsu Sōsō no Frieren ~Zensō~ (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End the Novel ~Prelude~), which explored five untold stories leading up to the main narrative. This 24-page novella was released in April 2024.

The new novella, entitled Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō (Magic to Make Flowers Bloom in the Sky), promises a similar length of 24 pages. While specific plot details remain under wraps, it will be released concurrently with the 14th volume of the main series, ensuring that it meets the high standards set by Yamada’s oversight.

A Little Something Extra

Revolt Freeze Beyond Journey's End

This exclusive edition of the 14th volume will include much more than just the novella Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō. It also comes with three fresh illustrations crafted by the manga’s illustrator, Tsukasa Abe. Furthermore, the edition boasts a hardback format, described to have a “grimoire”aesthetic, according to AnimeNewsNetwork.

Since its debut in April 2020 in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday, Frieren has gained substantial acclaim, leading to its English publication by Viz Media starting November 2021. The series is also receiving an anime adaptation, which premiered in September 2023, and has earned the title of the highest rated anime on MyAnimeList, with a second season on the horizon.

According to MyAnimeList, the plot of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is summarized as follows:

The Demon King has been defeated, and the victorious hero party returns home before disbanding. The four—mage Frieren, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, and warrior Eisen—reminisce about their decade-long journey as the moment to bid each other farewell arrives. But the passing of time is different for elves, thus Frieren witnesses her companions slowly pass away one by one.

Before his death, Heiter manages to foist a young human apprentice called Fern onto Frieren. Driven by the elf’s passion for collecting a myriad of magic spells, the pair embarks on a seemingly aimless journey, revisiting the places that the heroes of yore had visited. Along their travels, Frieren slowly confronts her regrets of missed opportunities to form deeper bonds with her now-deceased comrades.

Though no official English translation date for the new Frieren novella has been announced, it is likely that an English version will follow shortly after the Japanese release. Given the immense popularity of both the manga and anime internationally, fans can expect to read Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō soon after its initial launch.

Mark your calendars for March 18th, when the special edition of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will be available, featuring the novella Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō.
