Overview of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 22 Preview 4
In August, Microsoft launched the SQL Server 2025 Release Candidate 0 (RC0), and shortly after, in September, the company outlined its roadmap for SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).The anticipation around SSMS 22 has been heightened with the recent rollout of Preview 4, following the earlier Preview 3, which prominently featured Copilot integration.
Focus on Usability and Bug Fixes
Preview 4 is a more modest update compared to its predecessor, emphasizing the resolution of bugs and enhancements to user experience (UX).It is essential for everyday users that the core functionalities perform seamlessly, often taking precedence over sporadically used AI features.
New Features in Preview 4
One of the most notable additions in SSMS 22 Preview 4 is the introduction of a Reset button within the connection dialog. This feature allows users to clear specific fields conveniently. In conjunction with SQL Server 2025’s robust vector support for AI workloads, Preview 4 now facilitates the creation of vector and JSON indexes. This can be accessed in Object Explorer via Indexes > New Index > Vector Index. Additionally, users can now retrieve more detailed information regarding vector data types, enhancing understanding and usability.
Enhanced Snippet Files and Code Management
Microsoft has also enriched the snippet files available for vector indexing, AI models, and security for schema objects. Users can take advantage of these resources through Tools > Code Snippets Manager or by right-clicking within their coding environment.
Improved Functionality and Additional Bug Fixes
Several usability improvements and bug fixes have also been rolled out. For instance, users can now scroll the query window even when the results grid is focused, simply by using the mouse wheel. Furthermore, issues related to contrast in the status bar have been addressed. A new feature in the Help menu, titled Clear Entra ID Token Cache, allows for seamless connections using a fresh Entra ID token, rather than relying on the cached version, streamlining the connection process.
Additional Improvements and Resources
Other bug fixes pertain to the Generate Scripts Wizard, Available Databases, and the Activity Monitor, ensuring a more reliable experience overall. For users seeking more detailed information, Microsoft has elaborated on these updates in their official blog post.
