AMD appears to be making strides towards introducing its own Multi Frame-Generation (MFG) technology as part of its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) suite. This move is hinted at by recent updates to the FidelityFX Software Development Kit (SDK).
A New Era in Frame Generation: AMD FSR Expands
The latest iteration of AMD’s FSR platform, known as FSR Redstone, brings significant enhancements targeting Radeon GPU users. This update not only features improved upscaling techniques but also introduces new frame generation capabilities alongside Ray Regeneration support, all of which utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance performance and visual fidelity.
Despite these advancements, AMD has lagged in one critical area: Multi Frame Generation (MFG).MFG technology enables users to choose from various frame generation ratios, thus optimizing their gaming experience.

Currently, AMD’s FSR 4 only supports frame generation modes up to 2x. In contrast, NVIDIA pioneered MFG technology with its RTX 40 series, offering up to 4x modes and expanding to 6x in the upcoming RTX 50 series. Additionally, NVIDIA has implemented dynamic frame generation, which intelligently adjusts the frame generation mode according to the refresh rate of your monitor.
Not to be outdone, Intel has unveiled its own MFG technology this year with XeSS 3, which provides support for up to 4x modes across its Arc B-Series and Arc A-series GPUs and integrated GPUs.

Recent additions to the ADLX FidelityFX SDK indicate that AMD is preparing its own MFG technology. The new “IADLX3DFidelityDXFrameGenUpgradeRatioOption”allows users to select preferred frame generation ratios, aiming to enhance overall performance and visual quality.
This development aligns with the existing MFG frameworks, where users on supported GPUs can easily choose different frame generation ratios. For GPUs lacking MFG capabilities, users need merely to activate the standard frame generation for a typical 2x FPS boost.

The impending frame generation upgrade is expected to support AMD’s current and future hardware as gaming graphics demand continues to escalate with advancements such as Path Tracing. Furthermore, AMD is also developing an innovative FSR Diamond technology for its next-generation hardware, projected to debut in upcoming gaming consoles and RDNA 5 GPUs.
As AMD gears up to unveil its Multi-Frame Generation technology, anticipation builds around whether it will follow the lead of competitors with 4x performance modes or push beyond with 6x or higher ratios to compete with NVIDIA’s offerings.
